Akash Vukoti (May 29th, 2009) is an American spelling prodigy and TV personality with Indian ancestry. Akash rose to fame by appearing in the NBC Super Hit TV show Little Big Shots in March 2016.[1]. He was the First Ever First Grader to qualify and compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2016 [2]. On September 25, 2018, Vukoti was announced as one of the young celebrities who will compete on the Dancing with the stars: Juniors. His professional partner is Kamri Peterson.[3].

Spelling Career[edit]

Akash Vukoti is a genius who can read write three languages [4]. He started reading very early, participated in his first spelling bee at the age of 2 years and won at the age of 4 years[5][6]. He was inducted into the American Mensa at the age of 3[7] and named as the Davidson Young Scholar at the age of 5 [8][9]. In Kindergarten, he was tied for the 2nd runner-up of the Canton Repository 69th Regional Final Spelling Bee [10][11] and emerged as a Champion in the 28th San Angelo Regional Spelling Bee in first grade, which qualified him to participate in the National Spelling Bee[12]. He became the First-First Grader ever to compete in the history of the National Spelling Bee in 2016. He is popular for his systematic approach of spelling the word in the Spelling Bees. Even though, he misspelt in the third round and was out of the competition, he won the hearts of viewers everywhere for his competitive attitude and charming smile at the 2016 National Spelling Bee[13][14][15][16][17]. Akash, who is home-schooled by his Mom, also competed in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee[18].

TV Shows[edit]

Akash appeared on several TV shows and his YouTube videos became popular with millions of views. Akash appeared three times on the Popular TV Show Little Big Shots: First he appeared in the Season – 1 in 2016, then in 2017 for the season - 2[19][20] and he also appeared in the Little big Shots-UK in 2017. Jimmy Kimmel paired up with Akash to hilariously challenge the 2016 Co-Champions in the 13th Annual Jimmy Kimmel Live Spelling Bee on June 3rd 2016[21]. He was the guest on the Steve Harvey (Talk_show) in 2016[22] and competed with Harry Connick Jr on the Harry (talk Show) in 2017.

Documentaries / Film[edit]

Akash has been featured in the HBO and BBC documentaries. Episode 231 titled “Brain Games and Mental Athletes” of the Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel features Akash which first aired on June 21st 2016[23] The BBC documentary “The Human Body: Secrets of your life revealed” showcasing Akash talent aired on Oct 9th 2017 on BBC [24]. Akash is one of the four spelling stars featured in the 2018 Award winning documentary Film “Breaking the Bee[25][26][27] [28][29].

Recognitions[edit]

Akash was honored by the Indian American Associations in 2017. Telugu Association of North America TANA presented him with the Special Recognition Award[30] at its 21st biennial celebrations in St Louis MO. North American Telugu Society NATS awarded the honorary title “DhaaranaVaamana”[31] on its 5th Biennial celebrations in Schaumburg, IL.

Personal life[edit]

Akash Vukoti is the son of Chandrakala Jandyam and Dr. Krishna Vukoti, who emigrated to the United States of America from Andhra Pradesh, India. The couple has older daughter Amrita, who is also a member of Mensa and Davidson young Scholar[32].

Philanthropy[edit]

Akash loves philanthropy and donated to various non-profit organizations like Children's Miracle Network in San Angelo, Wikipedia, Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, Water.org and Kerala Floods Relief Fund[33]
