Akbar Lakestani (Persian: اکبر لکستانی; born 18 December 1968) is an Iranian-American Journalist, human rights activist, former political prisoner in Iran, and a former member and speaker of the city council of Showt city, in West Azerbaijan province of Iran.
Detention and incarceration in Iran[edit]
In the early months of 2007, Lakestani was detained and charged with "Insulting the regime officials" and "Advocacy against the regime".[1] After staying under arrest for a month, he was temporarily released with 40 million tomans of bail. Some of his crimes were described as, giving a speech in the main mosque of his city and discouraging people from attending a rally of then president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in September 2006. In January 2007, the revolutionary court of Khoy County convicted Lakestani and sentenced him to three years in prison.[2] Lakestani was transported to the prison and after having served a fraction of his sentence, he was sent on leave with bail because of his hunger strikes and various health issues. After some time, because of pressures from the intelligence services, he was forced to leave Iran, although he did eventually return after many years.[3][4]
Arrested on returning to Iran[edit]
Lakestani returned to Iran through the Serow border in September 2019 to see his ill mother. Though his past charges were dropped because of the passage of time, he was detained at the border under new charges of "Aid to opposition groups" and was transported to the office of the intelligence ministry in Urmia. During his detention, he went on multiple hunger strikes, which resulted in his transfer to the Imam Khomeini hospital in Urmia after his treatment, because of unfounded excuses of mental illness sent him to the Razi Psychiatric hospital.[5] Having been detained for 47 days, he was finally released with a bail and later returned to the United States.[6][7][8]
Suing the Islamic Republic of Iran[edit]
After returning to the U.S., Lakestani went to D.D.C federal court, filing a case against the Islamic republic, the supreme leader Ali Khamenei, and the IRGC, in .[9] Following his complaint, the D.D.C Federal court noted unlawful detention and torture, considering as innocent and supported transfer to Razi Psychiatric Hospital in Urmia.[10][11]
