Akif Canbaş (born 1980) is a Turkish former Greco-Roman wrestler and coach. Competing in the 84 kg division, he won the gold medal at the 2005 Military World Wrestling Championships and the bronze medal at the 2009 Mediterranean Games.[1][2][3]
Career
Canbaş was born in 1980 in Çekerek, in Turkey's Yozgat Province. He won a bronze medal at cadet level in European competition before establishing himself at senior level.[1]
His main international breakthrough came in military competition. In 2005, he won the 84 kg gold medal at the Military World Wrestling Championships in Vilnius.[3] He also competed for Turkey at the 2006 Wrestling World Cup, where the team finished fifth.[4]
In 2009, Canbaş won the bronze medal in the men's Greco-Roman 84 kg event at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara. His medal was listed in the Turkish National Olympic Committee's annual report and in the Turkish Ministry of Youth and Sports medal summary for the Games.[2][5]
After retiring from active competition, Canbaş moved into coaching. By 2017, he was part of the coaching staff of the Turkey men's Greco-Roman national wrestling team.[6] In 2019, following the 2019 European Wrestling Championships, he gave comments in his capacity as a national team coach.[7] He later continued his work with ASKİ Spor, including in the preparation of leading Turkish wrestlers such as Rıza Kayaalp.[8]
