Akkarapally
Akkarapally (sometimes referred to as Akkarappally or St. Mary's Ancient Pilgrim Church, Kanjirappally) is an ancient Catholic church located in Kanjirappally. This Catholic Church has the major archiepiscopal church title[1][not in citation given][2][3]. It is a Marian pilgrimage center visited by millions of people. It has long been believed that this place, under the diocese of Kanjirapally, has a mother figure from the ancient Christian center of Chayal (Currently Known as Nilakkal)[2][4]. It was built in the year 624 AD on the land given by Sri Veera Kerala Perumal, the ruler of Thekkumkur. Syro-Malabar rituals are followed here.
History
Thomas the Apostle had established a church in Nilackal (Chayal) in 54 AD. It was an important trading city in the erstwhile Chempakassery Kingdom and had flourishing trade with the Pandya Kingdom of Madurai. But years later, Chembakassery was at war with the kingdom of Madurai, due to a trade dispute. The Nilackal City was looted and torched and nothing remained of it. After Nilakkal church was burned down, although Thommy Mappilla, Chief Trustee of the church, managed to save the statue of the Blessed Virgin. The Syrian Christians of Nilackal, led by Thommy Mappila, fled to the Pazhoor Valley in Kanjirapally. Later, in 1449, a predecessor of Thommy Mappilla and Veera Kerala Perumal, the Maharaja (The King) of Thekkumkoor Kingdom, constructed a church in Kanjirapally.[2]
