History
The Akron Fire Department was formed on December 11, 1839 as a volunteer fire department known as the North Akron Fire Company.[5] Niagara Fire Company, No.2 was added in 1845 and Tornado Fire Company, No.3 was added in 1847. By 1866 the volunteer fire companies were consolidated to form the Akron Fire Department. On March 2, 1903, the department became fully paid and in 1914 the Akron Fire Department became one of the first fully motorized fire departments in the country. Today, the department operates out of 13 fire stations.
