Introduction

Akshat Mohite is a Scientist Astronaut Candidate trainee with Project PoSSUM, supported by NASA flight opportunities, and also the President of an American chapter of the National Space Society called National Space Society (USA) – Mumbai, India. He and his teammate were able to discover 4 new asteroids in the NEO and the main asteroid belt and were also accepted for an astronaut program by Space Nation. Akshat Mohite was just a 17-year-old boy when he was invited by NASA for the 2018 International Space Development Conference held in the United States.[1]

In the film The Martian, an astronaut got stuck on Mars and had to grow potatoes to survive. Akshat Mohite is actually making this story true. He has been researching how astronauts can grow their own food on Mars, and he has been doing this for the Mars 2032 mission. At just 18 years old, Akshat had become the second youngest scientist in the world and the youngest in Asia for Project PoSSUM, supported by NASA flight opportunities. Due to his intensive research in the fields of Materials Science, Astrobiology, and his in-depth knowledge of Hydroponics, he was able to put forward a few theories about growing plants on Mars. Though he is the youngest member of the 12-member team, he has taken up the important issue of food and health in Space. For the research work, which started in March 2019, he has planned to cultivate plants without soil on Mars and has also started testing it on an experimental basis.[2]

Municipal Commissioner of Thane, Sanjeev Jaswal (IAS), appreciated Akshat Mohite for being Asia's youngest and the world's second-youngest scientist-astronaut candidate for Project PoSSUM FO NASA.[3]

Down the Memory Lane

When he was in the 2nd standard, he used to look at the sky and always wondered what was beyond it. That was the time when it struck his mind what he wanted to do in life: to become a scientist and fly beyond the sky as an astronaut. He had a great interest in subjects like Physics and Chemistry, as he knew those were the things that might help him fulfill his dream. In the 9th standard, he took up Economics because by then he understood that to become a scientist, one must also be mindful of economic factors. Like every other student, he successfully completed his 10th grade from the IGCSE board (Cambridge board) in 2018. During the course of his studies, he had to keep himself fit to become an astronaut; hence, he started karate and became a national-level gold medalist in it. In the 11th standard, he gained admission to the science stream in a state college. By then, he had read enough to write his first research paper and submit it to organizations like NASA or ISRO; luckily, NASA had a competition going on called the NASA Ames Space Settlement Contest. This was a contest for which people typically prepared for a year, whereas he had only 10 days to complete his paper. He took up the challenge and started with the paper and completed it within 9 days. After submitting, he wasn't sure if he would get selected, but during his 11th-grade final exams, he received an email from NASA and the National Space Society stating that he had qualified and was invited to the prestigious International Space Development Conference 2018. It was a demanding time because he had to attend college in the morning, finish his homework in the evening, and then work on the paper at night (He slept only about 3 hours each night during those 9 days).

Once he was selected, he was happy, and everything seemed to be going right, but being a minor, his visa application was denied. It was depressing, but he didn't stop and started working on more papers and projects on Material Science, Propulsion Systems, Electricity Generation, and Atmospheric Science studies. His research on atmospheric science was notable, and hence he was selected for Project PoSSUM (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) by NASA Flight Opportunities. There were many applications, from which only 12 were selected for the research program. This selection made him the world's second-youngest and Asia's youngest scientist-astronaut candidate for Project PoSSUM for NASA. During this period, he performed well in flight simulations and imagery research. He also completed his hypoxia training and certification to fly planes to an altitude of 25,000 feet.
