Dr. Akun Sabharwal is a 2001 batch Indian Police Service Officer borne on the Telangana Cadre. He is presently posted as Dy. Inspector General of Police, Hyderabad Range.[1]

Early life and schooling[edit]

He was born in 1976 in Patiala though his schooling was done throughout the country as his father Wing Commander Shri. D P Sabharwal was with the Indian Air Force. He attended Kendriya Vidyalayas in Bangalore, Pune, Delhi, Assam, Ooty and Chandigarh. When in school and college he excelled in mathematics, yet chose to take up dentistry as a profession.[2] While working as an intern, he took the UPSC examination and qualified for the IPS. He was ranked 33rd All India.[3]

Work[edit]

He was trained in Kamrup district of Assam by Shri Mukesh Aggarwal and was involved in anti-extremist work in Sadiya and Charaido sub-divisions of upper Assam.

He married his batchmate Smita, an IAS officer and joined the Andhra Pradesh cadre [4][5] in 2004.

He was first posted in Anantapur district, a region in Rayalaseema infamous for factional feuds which he was tasked to tackle. The factional fights of this region are reproduced in the Bollywood thriller Rakta Charitra.[6][7][8]

He conducted and supervised Anti-Left Wing Extremist Operations in 2006-2007 as Officer on Special Duty, Warangal[9] and from 2007 to 2009 as Superintendent of Police, Visakhapatanam.[10] Combating extremism during this period, there were 28 exchanges of fire which led to neutralization of 36 CPI (Maoist) cadres and surrender of 132 cadres.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

As Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad Central Police, he gained experience in tackling urban problems especially Central Administrative District Policing in a Mega City.[18][19][20] This was in the backdrop of the agitation for a separate state of Telangana where huge human & material resources were employed to maintain peace and public order. He also started 'Sannihitham', Police Help Centers where citizens could file complaints. He initiated the crack down on drugs in the area.[21][22][23]

After a gap of 4 months, he rejoined Hyderabad Police as DCP, Hyderabad South in April 2012 when the area was under curfew due to communal tensions. The next 9 months were spent on the roads handling a volatile area of the city.[24]

The officer has also had short stints of 9 months each as Jt. Director, Anti Corruption Bureau and Commandant of an Armed Police Battalion.[25][26]

Sabharwal joined the SVP National Police Academy in Jan 2013 and as Assistant Director(Outdoors), was a part of the team which trained the 2012 & 2013 batch of IPS Officers.[27][28][29]

Dr. Akun Sabharwal was head of the Telangana drug regulatory authority, Drugs Control Administration from March 2015 to May 2016.[30][31][32] Efforts to improve the Regulatory mechanism in Pharmaceutical Manufacture & Sales were undertaken. The DCA conducted a series of raids on Manufacturing facilities; Corporate Hospitals, Online Pharmacies, Blood Banks & Pharmacies/Drug stores across the state in which several violators were booked.[33][34][35][36] [37][38][39]

He also held charge of Director, Excise from September 2015 to May 2016. In this capacity, the department worked hard to control Illicit distillation of liquor and its sale in the state of Telangana. Eight out of ten districts of Telangana were declared free from the menace of manufacture & sale of ID liquor.

On 27 May 2016, he has taken charge as Dy. Inspector General of Police, Hyderabad Range along with additional charge of Nizamabad Range. The jurisdiction covers 5 districts (out of 9 in Telangana) and 2 Police Commissionerates.

Personal life[edit]

He is married to Smita Sabharwal, his batchmate in the IAS who is currently posted as Additional Secretary to the Chief Minister of Telangana.
