The Baghdad derby between Al Shorta and Al-Zawraa, also known as Iraqi El Clasico,[1] is a football rivalry between Baghdad-based clubs Al Shorta and Al-Zawraa. They are two of the most successful clubs in Iraqi football history, having played each other in 4 cup finals with Al-Zawraa winning the 1996 Iraq FA Cup final and the 1998 Al-Muthabara Cup final and Al Shorta winning the 2000 Umm Al-Ma'arik Cup final and the 2013 Baghdad Cup final.[2]

Neither Al Shorta or Al-Zawraa have ever been relegated from the Iraqi Premier League, although Al Shorta has played in the Iraqi Premier League for one more season than Al-Zawraa having played in the inaugural season in 1974–75.[3] Al-Zawraa have won more league titles than any other Iraqi club with 13, and more Iraq FA Cups than any other club with 14, whereas Al Shorta have won 10 league titles (including League of the Institutes titles) but 0 Iraq FA Cups. Both sides have won 3 Umm Al-Ma'arik Cups, but Al-Zawraa have won 3 more Al-Muthabara Cups than Al Shorta. On the other hand, Al Shorta are one of only two Iraqi sides to win a major international club competition when they won the Arab Champions League in 1982, whereas Al-Zawraa have never won a major international competition. They have both reached finals of AFC tournaments (Al Shorta reached the 1971 Asian Champions League final and Al-Zawraa reached the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup final) but both lost.

In terms of matches between the two, Al-Zawraa has the better record with 44 wins compared to Al Shorta's 23 and there have been 26 draws. However, Al Shorta has the upper hand in terms of recent matches having won 6 and drawn 2 of the last 8 matches between the sides. Since the start of the 2000–01 season, Al Shorta have won 12 games compared with Al-Zawraa's 7.[4]
