The Independent News Agency (Arabic: وكالة الأخبار المستقلة, romanized: wikalāt al-axbār al-mustaqilah, French: Agence Indépendante d’Information), better known by its Arabic short name Al Akhbar (Arabic: الأخبار, romanized: al-axbār, lit. 'the news'), is a Mauritanian news agency and website.
History[edit]
Al Akhbar was founded on 4 October 2003 by a group of Mauritanian executives seeking to challenge the then existing media state monopoly in the country,[2] with Al Akhbar only being able to start officially operating in the country in 2007 after the democratic transition that happened after the 2005 coup d'état.[3]
It's the most popular news website in Mauritania, with over 500 thousand followers on Facebook.[4]
