Al Mahwit City District (Arabic: مديرية مدينة المحويت) is an administrative district within the Al Mahwit Governorate in western Yemen. It includes the city of Al Mahwit, which serves as the governorate’s capital.
Geography
The district is located in the Haraz Mountains at an elevation of approximately 2,019 meters. It features mountainous terrain, terraced agriculture, and traditional stone architecture. It borders Al Mahwit District and Ar Rujum District.
Demographics
According to Yemen’s 2004 census, the district had a population of 20,134, comprising 10,623 males and 9,511 females, across 2,655 households.
History
Al Mahwit was historically referenced as early as 1599 in the work Ghayat al-Amani by Yahya ibn al-Husayn. The city remained largely isolated until the 1970s, after which development projects improved infrastructure, including electricity, water, and sanitation systems.
Culture
The city and its surrounding areas are home to ancient mosques, stone fortresses, and traditional Yemeni villages.
