Alan Nichol (born March 31st 1946) is an American guitarist and songwriter who was a founding member of The Turtles, whose most notable work was their 1967 single "Happy Together".

Biography

Nichol was born in North Carolina before moving to California as a child. Al's first band was in 1963 at Westchester High in Los Angeles, California, where he played guitar in an instrumental surf band called “The Nightriders” alongside future Turtles band members Howard Kaylan (who was on saxophone), Don Murray, and Chuck Portz. Al was also in a choir group. Before changing their name to “The Crossfires”, Mark Volman joined as a saxophonist. [1]

Al and his group (now named The Turtles) were signed to White Whale Records in 1965. Their debut album *It Ain't Me Babe* was released shortly after, with their track also titled “It Ain't Me Babe” (originally sung and released by Bob Dylan), which would make it to the Billboard Top Ten shortly.

On February 11th 1967, “Happy Together” was released and it would be their most familiar song. They would release a few more albums until 1969 with more hits such as “Elenore” and “She’d Rather Be with Me”.

Alongside Volman and Kaylan, Al Nichol was one of the longest-serving members of the Turtles throughout their five-year run.

After the disbandment of the Turtles in 1970, Nichol would live a private life. He currently resides in Reno, Nevada with his wife[2]. A website from 2011 states that Nichol was arrested for drunk driving in 2005.[3]
