Al Sura English (Arabic: الصورة meaning The Picture) is an online media outlet which was launched in 2017. The outlet posts breaking news from the Middle East, with a special focus on Iraq.[1] It is often cited by mainstream media.[2][3]
The channel has claimed that it sources its news from reporters and individuals throughout the Middle East.
Office
In March 2018, the group stated that it moved into an office in Manhattan's Flatiron District in New York City.
Ownership
The channel has been accused of being an ad hoc platform owned by Iraqi Shiite pro-Iranian militias. However, the channel denies these allegations and stated that it does not receive funding from any source and depends solely on the efforts and donations of its contributors.[4] While the outlet does not have a public owner, its correspondents have appeared on interviews in RT, TRT, and al-Araby.[5]
Criticism
The channel has been accused by many of being anti-Kurdistan during the 2017 Kurdish Referendum.[citation needed]
In October 2017, Hiwa Afandi, head of the KRG Department of Information Technology, accused Al Sura of being a self-proclaimed ad hoc platform to serve specific purposes.[6]
In March 2021, the channel stated on its Twitter page that it finalized all legal proceedings with Turkish authorities over publication of Turkish troops’ deaths.[7]
