Alain Elayi
Alain Elayi is an academic, researcher, then business manager. He has followed a career as a nuclear physicist as shown by his publications, carried out both alone and in collaboration on prestigious international projects. His achievements range from basic research to applied research and cover a wide variety of fields. His latest achievement was to invent a new low-cost, non-polluting seawater desalination method, which is patented and tested.
Early life and education
Alain G. Elayi born in Tripoli, Lebanon, Alain G. Elayi grew up there until 1963 when he got his high school degree (Baccalauréat Mathématiques Élémentaires).[1] He then traveled to France where he obtained his first Doctorate in 1972 (Doctorat de 3e cycle). At the same time, he was teaching at the University of Saint-Etienne among others, and started his scientific publications. He then worked for 7 years in the Middle East where his career was impacted by the instabilities of this region. He was engaged by research centers while lecturing in different universities: the National Center of Scientific Research of Lebanon, the Lebanese University of Beirut, Al Hazen Research Institute of Baghdad, and the University of Baghdad. In July 1980, before the Iraq-Iran war, he came back to France where he decided to settle with his wife and their two children: he lectured in different Institutes. In 1982, he got the highest degree in France – Doctorat d’état en Physique Nucléaire – from the University of Lyon (where he had already got his first Doctorate).
He took French nationality, and he became a senior lecturer at the University of Paris where he continued his research in Nuclear Physics and got an habilitation to become Professor. He has also much interest in scientific methods applied to the field of ancient history and archaeology. His research and experimental achievements were made in such places as the CERN (Organisation européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire or European council for Nuclear Research) or the CEA (the French Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique). He has published 12 books and about 100 scientific articles. He also published several general articles, participated to radio and television broadcasts and received a reward from the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in France for one of his books.
From Research to Industry: In the frame of his private company Scientechnix, Professor A.G. Elayi collaborated with some civil Nuclear companies: EDF (Électricité de France), having more than 50 huge nuclear reactors and having until recently the monopoly of selling electricity in France. Let us recall that over 80% of French electricity was produced by nuclear reactors. He has also collaborated with the Belgian company Electrabel which produces nuclear electricity in Belgium. His interventions covered more than 20 nuclear power plant sites and he developed several expert systems for his interventions.
Some Achievements
These achievements are supported by the following List of publications in scientific international journals, conferences, books...
1. New Method of Analysis using Nuclear Techniques: This project was developed during 8 years through the publication of about 20 articles in international journals, conferences and book. It was realized in different countries where he lived.
2. Fundamental Research in Nuclear Physics: Many important achievements have been realized in collaboration with large international projects. For example, the experimental discovering, for the first time, of the fine structure of 14C emitted from 223Ra and 224Ra.
3. Study of Nuclear Transmutation: This project led the author to change the approach of the transmutation of the High Level Long Term Radioactive Waste by including the Plutonium into the Transmutation strategy. This resulted in a change in the whole approach to Transmutation at that moment.
4. Development of an Expert System called SYSEG for the generation and for the treatment of gamma-ray and electron spectras: An over 20 thousands instructions program has been developed in the 90’s in order to make a detailed expert analysis of gamma-ray and electron spectra. This program has been intensely used in order to realize the different expertise asked by many nuclear industrial sites. It can analyze other software treatments, show their errors and propose corrections. It allows interactive analyses if required.
5. In the field of nuclear medicine: He has developed a camera for exploring the brain.
6. Numismatics studies: An extensive work has been carried in parallel in the field of numismatics. It included the study of all aspects related to the numismatics of ancient coins, including the determination of their metallic composition by using non-destructive nuclear techniques, the development of a new method of metrology for ancient coins, etc. 6 books (corpus) and many articles related to this work have been published.
7. Low Cost Seawater Desalination: His latest achievement is a low cost and non-polluting new method of seawater desalination. It obtained patents from countries such as USA, China, India… A large prototype of 15 meters high has been constructed and has proved the quality of the produced water and the low desalination cost of this new technology affordable by countries with limited resources.
