Alakazaam is a 1998 fantasy comedy film starring Chris Tucker as the title character, a 10,000-year-old genie who appears from a magic lamp to grant a boy three wishes.

Plot[edit]

The film begins with a school field trip in a museum. One boy named [[Erik Per Sullivan|Charley]] is teased mercilessly by his classmates. Eventually, to escape them, he hides in the museum storage room only to be locked inside. The rest of the class leaves without noticing he’s missing and the museum is shut down. As he frantically tries to get out a window, he knocks over a box revealing a magic lamp. He picks it up, remembering the stories and rubs it. Out pops an ancient genie Chris Tucker who informs the boy that he has been granted three wishes. His first wish is to go home, only the genie transports him inside the bottle. It takes Charley several minutes to find the genie who apologizes that his magic is rusty. He then waves his hands and Charley finds himself in his own room.

The next morning, Charley puts the lamp in his backpack and heads off to school. On the way, he is confronted by the same bullies who bothered him the day before. As they throw him on the ground he wishes he could fight like Jackie Chan, only to find himself turned into Jackie Chan. The bullies run off scared, but Charley is so confused he runs off without his backpack. He then spends the day trying to convince people who he really is and trying to find the lamp.

Meanwhile, one of the bullies finds the backpack and takes the lamp. He brings out Alakazaam and makes a wish that he could have a million bucks only to find himself surrounded by a herd of deer. When one of his buddies grabs the lamp and wishes he could fly, only to be turned into a bird. The last bully wishes he could fight like Jackie Chan and is then also turned into a Jackie Chan duplicate. After this bully beats up his teacher, Charley arrives to confront the bully and the two Jackie Chans fight each other to a standstill. When it looks like there’s no hope, Alakazaam hands the lamp to Charley as says “You have one more wish!” and Charley wishes none of this had ever happened. He finds himself back in the museum and when the bullies hassle him like the first time, a museum guard who looks just like Alakazaam stops them and informs the teacher of their rotten behavior. Charley asks him if he knows him from somewhere and the guard just says “You never know,” and winks.

Reception[edit]

Alakazaam received extremely negative reviews from critics and was not subsequently rebroadcast. The filming was done a year before Rush Hour and television executives released the movie as a summer filler to capitalize on the success of the movie, but viewing was extremely limited. It was later put out on VHS tape though copies are next to impossible to find
