Alan Yates (born 16 December 1944, Northampton, England) is an English linguist and Catalanophile.[1]
Biography[edit]
He studied philology at the University of Cambridge, where he was introduced to Catalan studies by Geoffrey J. Walker, as part of the study programme set up by Josep Maria Batista i Roca.[2]
He has been a lecturer at the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Sheffield since 1968 where he has occupied the Balearic Islands chair for Catalan Studies since 1990. He has specialized in teaching Catalan to anglophones and has also published several studies on the modern Catalan novel and the work of Narcís Oller. He has been secretary (1971–1980) and president (1987–1990) of the Anglo-Catalan Society and in 1980 he started coordinating the Society's series Occasional Papers.[3] In 1990 he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi (in English Saint George's Cross) and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Civil Merit.[4][2] In 2003 he was awarded the Catalonia International Prize of the Institute of Catalan Studies in recognition of his research work as a whole.[5] Since 2006 he has been a corresponding member of the Philology Section of the Institute of Catalan Studies. On 28 March 2007 he was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize in recognition of his life-long devotion to the study and teaching of Catalan language and literature.[6]
