Albert Armstrong

Albert “Shorty” Armstrong was born on the 14th July 1920 in Bolton, Greater Manchester. He was an electrical engineer before enlisting in the RAFVR in October 1940. He was the pilot of a Wellington Bomber and on the 10th August 1942 his plane was shot down, forcing him and his crew to parachute out. They were captured and eventually transferred to Stalag Luft III. Albert played a key part in the Great Escape as he was a tunneller due to his smaller stature. He was the 42nd officer out of the tunnel and over 3 hours helped guide the next 20 people out of the tunnel. After 48 hours he was one of the 73 recaptured and transported back to Stalag Luft III where he remained for the rest of the war. Albert passed away in a car crash in December 1986 in Portreath, Truro, England.
