Albert (“Bert”) Allen Foer (born August 5, 1944 ) is retired American lawyer, businessman, and antitrust activitist. He is most widely known for founding the American Antitrust Institute, a non-profit organization that advocates for stronger antitrust enforcement.[1]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Foer was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He received an A.B. from Brandeis University in 1966; a M.A. in political science from Washington University in St. Louis in 1967; and a J.D. in 1973 from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served on the University of Chicago Law Review.

Career[edit]

Foer began his legal career as an associate at Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) in 1973. He went on to work at the Federal Trade Commission from 1975 to 1981, where he rose to the position of Acting Deputy Director of the Bureau of Competition.

In 1981, Foer briefly returned to private practice, but soon left in 1983 to join Melart Jewelers, a retail jewelry founded by his father. He was Chairman and CEO when the chain was sold in 1995.[2]

In 1998, Foer founded the American Antitrust Institute, where he served as President until his retirement in 2014.[3] While at AAI, Foer worked to advance a more active antitrust agenda.[4] In 2016, Foer received the Esther Peterson Consumer Service Award from the Consumer Federation of America.[5]

Personal[edit]

Foer is married to Esther Safran Foer, the former Executive Director of Sixth and I Historic Synagogue.[6] They have three sons who are all writers, Franklin Foer, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Joshua Foer.[7]
