Albert Garcia Elena (born 1970 in Barcelona, Catalonia) is a Catalan poet and fiction writer. He has published several poetry books recognized with major literary awards in the Catalan-speaking world, including the Vicent Andrés Estellés Poetry Prize, the Miquel de Palol Prize, the Joan Alcover Prize, the Mallorca Literary Creation Prize, and the Màrius Torres Poetry Prize, among others.[1][2][3]

Career

Garcia Elena began writing at the age of 22. In his early career, he explored different genres and received several awards, including the "13th Literary Competition for Young Writers" (Government of Catalonia, 1994),[4] the Cerverí Award for song lyrics (1998),[5] and the "Vent de Port" Short Story Prize (2002).[6]

He earned a degree in Catalan Philology from the University of Barcelona in 2000. That same year, he received the "Creació Jove" Prize from the Barcelona City Council,[7] which enabled him to participate in the X Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, held in Sarajevo.[8]

Since 2015, he has focused mainly on poetry, earning awards in Catalonia, the Valencian Country, and the Balearic Islands (see Awards section).

In 2021, he published El coure sota el Hudson, previously awarded the 2020 Joan Alcover Prize. The volume, inspired by a stay in New York City, includes reflections on poetic creation.

That same year, he delivered the opening address at the Barcelona Poetry Festival, presenting the stage piece Vòrtex(t), which was streamed online and remains available for viewing.[9]

In 2024, he was awarded a Montserrat Roig Writing Grant by the Barcelona City Council.[10]

Reception and criticism

Various critical readings have described Garcia Elena's work as oriented toward "anti-rhetoric", formal purification, and a search for expressive essentiality and linguistic precision.[19]

Poet and essayist Carles Camps Mundó has situated Garcia Elena "in a place of honor within the most contemporary experimentalism", noting his "textual radicalism" within the field of Catalan experimental poetry.[20]

From a broader academic perspective, Edgar Illas has analyzed late 20th- and early 21st-century Catalan culture through the lens of “perplexity” in the face of global disorder. This framework has been applied to contextualize poetic trends of the era, including Garcia Elena’s work, especially its tension between purified forms and shifting social environments.[21]

During the 2021 Barcelona Poetry Festival, Garcia Elena described his writing as a practice of formal purification aimed at "saying only what is indispensable", and positioned his work in dialogue with contemporary anti-rhetorical traditions.[22]

According to the cultural chronicle in Núvol, Garcia Elena’s keynote at the 2021 Barcelona Poetry Festival took the form of a poetic landscape portrait—"which, in turn, is a portrait of the country"—and included a critique of "poetism", lexical clichés, and certain tendencies in cultural policy, adopting a tone both provocative and mocking. The author coined aphorisms such as "Tradition does not exist" and stated that "Silence is what a poem deserves—not applause".[23]

Beyond formal concerns, several readings have emphasized the social and poetic critique in Garcia Elena’s writing: an ironic and sharply self-aware voice that explores the tension between the individual and society, blending urban imagery with classical references. Critics have also highlighted his symbolic and linguistic richness—original and impactful metaphors—and a perspective that appeals to readers' awareness while avoiding moralism.[24]
