Albert Jonathan Russell

Albert Jonathan Russell (1829 – 1896)[1] was a Confederate officer and superintendent of public schools in Florida from 1884 until 1893. The Florida Archives have a photo of him from 1865.[2]
He moved from Virginia to Florida at age 15.[3] As superintendent of schools he was an advocate for industrial education.[4] He served as first president of the old Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Home Association.[5]
Russell Hall, a school in Key West opened in 1887 was named for him.[6] A masonic lodge in Jacksonville is named for him.[7]
