Albert Troughton

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Albert Troughton (1893 - April 22, 1915) was a private of the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, serving in the First World War, under service number 10853. He was deployed to the Western Front on October 6, 1914. In early 1915, Private Troughton was found guilty of going AWOL and deserting his post. He was executed by firing squad on April 22, 1915.[1] Before his execution he was able to send a letter home to his family, which details his time in the Army and his fighting at the Battle of Ypres.[2] He was posthumously pardoned in 2006.[3] The Shot at Dawn Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas, in Staffordshire, UK, commemorates him, as well as another 305 British servicemen that were executed for desertion during the First World War.

He is buried at the Estaires Communal Cemetery in Nord, France. The roll of the fallen claims he was “killed in action” at Merris.[4]

His desertion and subsequent execution are discussed in "Shot at Dawn: The Fifteen Welshmen executed by the British Army in the First World War."[5]
