About[edit]

Dr. Albert Y. Leung is a pharmacognosist, speaker, author, and blogger. He has focused his research on production and profiling of natural products and traditional extracts. The breadth of his work includes Cercuma longa[1], Papaver somniferum[2], Coryphantha runyonii[3], and Psilocybe baeocystis[4][5]. Currently he dedicates his blog to speaking to the public about how to obtain access to natural products and traditional extracts for research and health care.

EDUCATION[edit]

In the late 1960s into the 1970s, Albert attended National Taiwan University in Taipei City, Taiwan; while there he earned his B.S. in Pharmacy.

Transitioning from Taiwan, Albert was accepted into a joint M.S. and Ph.D. thesis track at the University of Michigan. While there he focused his thesis work on psilocybin analogs in hallucinogenic mushrooms. He was one of the first to have isolated and named baeocystin and norbaeocystin (monomethyl & dimethyl analogs of psilocybin) from Psilocybe baeocystis.[6]

CAREER[edit]

Dr. Leung has focused on accurately identifying raw natural products and works to produce genuine traditional extracts using appropriate modern technology. He has been an advocate of product identification and quality in the herbal industry, and is known for his 'no-nonsense approach', reflected in his publications. From 1996 to 2004, he published the Leung’s (Chinese) Herb News, a newsletter that sought to influence research and product quality in the herbal field.

He has founded numerous companies, 2 of which have received grants or contracts from the US government for research on traditional herbs. With the most recent one, he and his team have developed the Phyto-True line of products[7], whose Representative Botanical Reference Materials (RBRM), which they hope to use as a parallel to drug reference standards, received a patent by the European Patent Office in 2019 after a decade of review. Dr. Leung believes that RBRM's represent the essential first step in the research, quality control, and manufacture of true traditional Chinese medicines and natural products.
