The Alberta School Council's Association (ASCA) was formed in 1929 as an affiliate of the Canadian Home and School Federation. It is a volunteer, not for profit organization that evolved to promote and support strong school communities through the facilitation of collaborations among education partners, including parents, to enhance student learning. ASCA is committed to the vision of "a respected and empowered school council in every Alberta school”, and parent engagement in education at the local (School), regional (School Board) and provincial (ASCA Board of Directors) levels, primarily through the vehicle of school council.

The Alberta School Councils' Association is headquartered in Edmonton, in the Alberta Teacher's Association building.[2]

History[edit]

In 1929, the Alberta Federation of Home and School Associations was created by volunteers after a meeting of ten representatives from Parent Teacher Associations from across the province. As of 1948, the organization’s name had shifted to Alberta Home and School Councils’ Association (AHSCA). By 1995, revisions to the Alberta School Act included mandating the creation of school councils as a forum for parents to advise the principal and school board on education matters.[3] In 2014 they once more changed name to Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA).[4]
