Alberto Garcia-Diaz is a Colombian-born American industrial engineer, operations research analyst, author, and academic.[1] He holds the rank of Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at both Texas A&M University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.[1][2] Garcia-Diaz is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).[2] He is recognized for his research contributions to facilities planning, network flows, highway cost allocation, and pavement management systems.[1]
Early life and education
Garcia-Diaz completed his undergraduate education at the Industrial University of Santander in Colombia, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1970.[2] He then relocated to the United States for graduate studies under a LASPAU scholarship, which he held from 1971 to 1973.[2] He attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, earning a Master of Science in industrial engineering in 1973 and completing his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the same discipline in 1978.[2]
Academic career
Garcia-Diaz began his instructional career at the Industrial University of Santander, serving as an assistant professor from 1973 to 1975 and as head of the Industrial Production Department from 1974 to 1975.[2]
In August 1978, he joined the faculty of Texas A&M University as an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering.[2] He was promoted to associate professor in 1983 and attained the rank of full professor in September 1987.[2] Concurrently, from 1987 to 2005, he operated as a research engineer for the Texas Transportation Institute.[2] Within the department, he served as Director of the Undergraduate Program (2000–2005) and Associate Department Head (2000–2004).[2] He stepped down from active service on July 31, 2005, receiving the lifetime title of Professor Emeritus.[2]
In August 2005, Garcia-Diaz transitioned to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as a professor within the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering.[2] Over his tenure, he held several administrative roles, including College of Engineering Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (2005–2008), Interim Department Head (2006–2008), and Director of the Graduate Program (2011–present).[2] He was subsequently appointed Professor Emeritus at the institution.[1]
Industry and consulting
Outside of academia, Garcia-Diaz served as an industrial supervisor of compensation, plans, and benefits at the Refinery of Cartagena for EXXON/ECOPETROL in 1974.[2] His consulting history includes projects evaluating large-scale network optimization for corporate and municipal infrastructure. He designed gas distribution systems for the Midcon Corporation (1989–1990), optimized terminal handling times for Watkins Motor Lines, Inc. (1982–1983), and designed cost-effectiveness models for bridge systems alongside Resource International Inc. (1985).[2]
Research and publications
Garcia-Diaz's research concerns the optimization of transport infrastructure, focusing on mathematical programming, integer algorithms, and game theory applied to civil logistics platforms.[2] Over his tenure, he supervised or co-supervised 24 Ph.D. dissertations.[2] He has also authored several engineering textbooks utilized within academic curricula, including:
