Aldo E. Calogero
Aldo Eugenio Calogero is a Full Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, University of Catania Medical School, and Director of the Division of Andrology and Endocrinology, University Teaching Hospital “Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele”, Catania, Italy.
Career
At the age of 27 years, he moved to the United States to begin an International Fogarty Fellowship, at the Developmental Endocrinology Branch (DEB), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA (Director Dr. D. Lynn Loriaux), from 1985 to 1988.
From 1988 to 1989, he participated as Guest Researcher (Scholarship from Upjohn Co., Kalamazoo, MI, USA) at the Clinical Neuroendocrinology Branch, National Institute of Mental Health (Director Dr. Philip W. Gold) and the DEB, NICHD, NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA.
In this prestigious institution, he worked under the supervision of Prof. George P. Chrousos, who mentored him during the fellowship at the NIH. He worked hard during the NIH experience, establishing a rat hypothalamic organ culture to study the neuroendocrine regulation of the CRH neuron. During that time, he also attended statistical evening courses to acquire skills in statistics and data analysis. During his experience in the United States, he deepened his knowledge on the neuroendocrinological aspects of the activity of the neurons that secrete CRH by carrying out copious studies, mainly in rodents. He made a great contribution to the scientific literature of the time on this topic by publishing dozens of original articles.
At the end of 1989, he returned to Italy where he obtained the position of Assistant Professor of Endocrinology at the Department of Clinical Medicine of the University of Catania. In addition to the clinical activity in Endocrinology and Andrology, he concentrated his research on the neuroendocrine regulation of neurons that secrete GnRH in rats. Subsequently, he began to take an interest in different aspects of male infertility. These included sperm chromosomal aneuploidies and DNA integrity, cigarette smoking, male accessory gland infections/inflammations (MAGI), diabetes and metabolic disorders, hypogonadism, hormonal and non-hormonal treatment of infertile patients. In particular, he conducted personally and with the research team that in the meantime established, numerous studies to evaluate the role of MAGI, environmental pollutants, diabetes mellitus, and cigarette smoke on both conventional and biofunctional sperm parameters, which have led to the development of strategies to prevent the onset of male infertility. More recently, he is also investigating the possible existence of a male equivalent of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
In 1990, he became Assistant Professor of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Catania School of Medicine, Catania, Italy (Directed by Prof. Polosa). He held this position until 2002 when the same Department was headed by Prof. Rosario D’Agata. In 1995, he worked at the Nottingham University Research and Treatment Unit in Reproduction (NURTURE), Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nottingham, United Kingdom, as Guest Researcher, carrying out studies on GABA and progesterone effects on sperm motility and intracellular cAMP content.
In 2002, he became Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Catania Medical School. From 2004 to 2013, he was Director of the Second School of Specialization in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the same University and, from 2018 to today, he holds the position of Deputy Director of the School of Specialization in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases. Since 2011, he is Director of the Andrology and Endocrinology Division, University Teaching Hospital “Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele”, Catania, Italy. Since 2014, he has held the position of Deputy Director of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Catania. In 2018, he was appointed Full Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Catania Medical School, Catania, Italy.[1]
Publications
He has published more than 800 articles and abstracts: 385 are original articles published in peer-reviewed journals with an impact factor (total impact factor 1277.474, year 2018), 95 are chapters published in national and international books, and 317 are abstracts. h-Index: 52 (Scopus, May 9, 2020).
