Aleksandr Sergeyevich Alexandrov (Алекса́ндр Серге́евич Алекса́ндров ; born May 1, 1953) is a Russian painter, graphic artist, and enameller. He is also the president of the Yaroslavl branch of the Union of Artists of Russia (since 2011).[1]

Alexandrov has received numerous accolades, including the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" (2nd class, 2021),[2] and participates in regional, national, and international exhibitions. His works include easel painting, graphic art, hot enamel techniques, and stained-glass projects.

Biography

Aleksandr Sergeyevich Alexandrov was born on May 1, 1953, in Rybinsk, into a family of artists. His father, Sergey Vasilyevich Alexandrov, and his mother, Tamara Ivanovna, were both graduates of the Yaroslavl Art School.[1]

From 1970 to 1975, Alexandrov studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Kostroma State Pedagogical Institute, named after Nikolay Nekrasov.[3] His teachers included prominent figures such as F. I. Korablyov, A. P. Belykh, and A. I. Buzin. He began his independent artistic career in 1980, working in painting, graphic art, enamel, and stained glass.

In 1997, Alexandrov became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia.[1] From 2000 to 2011, he served on the board of the Yaroslavl branch of the Union as vice-chairman, and in 2011, he was elected president of the branch.[1]

During his career, Alexandrov has actively participated in international cultural exchanges and exhibitions. He undertook study trips and exhibitions in France, Germany, and Luxembourg between 2001 and 2014, where his works were well received.[3] His international exposure has significantly influenced his style, blending traditional Russian elements with a broader artistic vocabulary.

Artistic Style and Major Works

Artistic Analysis and Expert Opinions

Art historians and critics have praised Alexandrov's art for its depth and versatility. L. Bitkolova, an art historian, remarked that his work embodies "the lyrical tradition of Russian landscapes, rooted in classical forms while embracing modernist sensibilities."[4]

She further stated:

  • "His brushwork conveys both energy and emotional resonance, oscillating between the delicate vibrancy of impressionist traditions and a bold, abstracted reinterpretation of nature's motifs." Another expert, V. Krivonosov, noted the "harmonious interplay of color and light" in Alexandrov's stained-glass creations, emphasizing their ability to "transform public spaces into sanctuaries of artistic reflection."[5]

His paintings often evoke a sense of theater, with critics describing them as "visual performances" that invite viewers into a dynamic interaction between light, color, and form.[6]

Monumental Works

  • St. Alexander Nevsky Iconostasis (2003) – Alexandrov designed and led the creation of the iconostasis for the chapel in the St. Vladimir Cathedral in Sevastopol.[3]
  • Valentina Tereshkova Stained-Glass Window (2010) – A monumental 30m² stained-glass window created for the Yaroslavl Planetarium. Using the Tiffany technique and composed of over 1,500 glass pieces, this work pays tribute to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.[7]
