Aleksey Afanasyevich Kokel (1 March 1880, village Tarkhany (Simbirsk Governorate (now Batyrevsky District, Chuvash Republic)) — 4 February 1956, Kharkiv, Ukraine) was a Chuvash and Soviet Ukrainian painter.
Biography
Aleksey Kokel was born in Tarkhany and had many siblings. His love for fine art began in his early childhood.
Growing up, he would paint different scenes on slate, such as wildlife native to the area, the village, or the local church. While studying at the local school he liked to redraw illustrations from his textbooks.
Following his brother’s path, he went to Simbirsk Chuvash teacher's school. However, he could not finish because of a disease (tuberculosis).
Kokel had a beautiful voice, that caught the attention of the village priest in the church choir. Here he was interested in painting icons. Later, he began to write about their customs. With the money, his father bought him a book, illustrated by the best artists of the time.
In 1902–1903 he studied at the Normal School of Drawing at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, and in 1904 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts.
In 1905 he changed his name from Afanasiev to Kokel.
Thanks to his diploma work "In The Tea Room" (1912), he was awarded a trip to Italy.
From 1916 onwards, A. Kokel lived and worked in Ukraine, and he participated in the development of higher art education. He taught at Kharkiv Art College (1916–1921) and the Kharkiv Art Institute (1921–1936).
In 1956 he died and was buried in Kharkiv.
