Alessandro Giuliani (20 September 1925 - 4 October 1997) was an Italian legal philosopher, historian of law and professor of philosophy of law.[1]

Early life and education

Giuliani was born in Lecce on 20 September 1925 to Adolfo Giuliani, a magistrate, and Livia Grassi.[1]

After completing classical secondary studies in Lecce, Giuliani enrolled at the Artillery and Engineering Academy in Turin and attended engineering courses. At the same time he studied political science at the University of Pavia. After the Armistice of Cassibile in September 1943, he joined the Garibaldi-Carnia partisan brigade, was wounded and captured, and later returned to the University of Pavia, where he changed to law. He graduated in law in 1947 under Giuseppe Stolfi.[1]

Academic career

In January 1948, Giuliani became an assistant in the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Pavia, beginning a collaboration with the political scientist Bruno Leoni. From 1954 to 1958, he taught the history of economic doctrines at Pavia.[1] In 1953 he went to Spain, where he attended a doctoral course in Madrid under Alfonso Garcia-Gallo and studied Spanish legal history.[1]

In 1959 Giuliani obtained the Italian libera docenza in philosophy of law. In 1960 he moved to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where he continued research on Scottish philosophy, Adam Smith and judicial logic.[1] He returned to Pavia, where he held teaching posts in common law and Italian legal history. In 1969, he was appointed to teach philosophy of law at the University of Perugia, and in 1970 he became a professor there.[1] He remained associated with Perugia for the rest of his career, serving as dean of the Faculty of Law from 1976 to 1979, apart from a period at the Faculty of Law of Sapienza University of Rome.[1]

Giuliani taught philosophy of law at Perugia from 1969 to 1997; a 2010 conference at the University of Perugia, later published as Alessandro Giuliani: l'esperienza giuridica fra logica ed etica, was dedicated to the range of his work and its reception among historians, economists and jurists.[2]

Personal life

In October 1955 Giuliani married Rosalia Mallart Palacios, daughter of a professor at the University of Madrid. They had six children: Adolfo, Sandra, Sara, Stefano, Ugo and Enzo.[1] In 1993 he moved to Monte del Lago, near Lake Trasimeno. He died in Perugia on 4 October 1997.[1]
