Alex Fynn
Alex Fynn (born 7 March 1992) is a South African-born film director, producer and editor, best known for directing ZANEWS, which won the South African Film and Television Award for Best TV Comedy. He also directed Forms, which won the South African Music Award for Music Video of the Year in 2018. Fynn employs dance and photo-realistic computer-generated effects in his work. Fynn began his professional career as a director and editor on the International Emmy nominated South African satirical series, ZANEWS. He received three South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS) including Best Comedy Director and Best Editor while working on 6 seasons of the weekly show on StarSat. He conceptualised and directed FORMS for Red Bull, the 2018 South Afircan Music Award (SAMA) winner for Music Video of the Year. He is based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Early Life
Fynn was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2002 he moved to Cape Town where his passion and talent for filmmaking started. While completing his schooling at Westerford High School in Cape Town, he met Ian Gabriel, director of Forgiveness (2004), who invited onto the set of an American Express commercial he was directing as a directing intern. Gabriel provided Fynn with valuable insight into the film industry and inspired him to further his studies in the field. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture Medium at AFDA film school in 2013[1]. While studying he created various music videos for up-and-coming artists.
Career
In 2013, he started working in the film industry as a director and editor on the weekly television show ZANEWS where he garnered two SAFTAS for Best Director in a Television Comedy and one SAFTA for Best Editor in a Television Comedy. The show was also nominated for an International Emmy Award in 2016.[2]
He went on to work in the commercials industry at a digital agency, Iconic. He was hired as a director and editor creating a large amount of branded content for various international clients. He worked with the likes of Red Bull, Asics, Woolworths, Primark, Tommy Hilfiger and Boden. While working at Iconic, he conceptualised and directed FORMS for Red Bull which went on to win the 2018 SAMA for Music Video of the Year collaborating with SAFTA and SAMA winner Rouge and choreographer Rudi Smit.[3][4][5] FORMS also won Best Performances at the Feedback Film Festival in Toronoto.[6]
In November 2018, Fynn left Iconic and announced the creation of his own film production company, Predator Media[7], together with his partner Tassyn Munro. He started production with Run As One (2019) which was an official selection at the Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs in Milan and at the Jozi Film Festival in Johannesburg.[8][9] The documentary was bought by Showmax and is due for release in April 2020.
