Alex Gacheche is a Kenyan-American technology executive who leads Meta Platforms’ global internal audits covering information security, infrastructure, and artificial-intelligence systems.[1]
Early life and education
Gacheche was born on 10 April 1977 in Nyeri, on the forested slopes of Mount Kenya. From an early age he was fascinated by electronics and problem-solving and was encouraged to excel academically.
He attended the Nairobi School, a national boarding institution noted for its rigorous curriculum and competitive extracurricular scene. While there, he balanced science-club projects with rugby and debate—experiences he later credited for shaping his collaborative leadership style.
After earning a business degree from the University of Nairobi, Gacheche moved to the United States to study accounting and information systems at the University of California, Los Angeles. Years later, while advancing his audit career at Freddie Mac, he completed an executive-education programme in Data Science and Strategic Extraction at Harvard University, blending advanced analytics with C-suite leadership training.
Career
Gacheche began his professional journey in 1998 at Arthur Andersen, working on technology-risk projects for multinational clients.
In 2002, he joined Bank of America as a risk manager for premier banking. Two years later he moved into advisory roles, first at Ernst & Young (EY) and then at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), leading teams that developed fraud-analytics playbooks and model-risk frameworks for Fortune 500 companies.
Recruited by Freddie Mac in 2010, his experience included building the enterprise's first data management audit function, being part of the team that rolled out the first risk management framework, and significant work around model risk management.[2]
Since 2021, he has served as Global Head of Internal Audit for Information Security, Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence at Meta Platforms, where he liaises with the board audit committee on AI-related risk.[3]
Thought leadership and speaking
Within the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Gacheche advises on artificial intelligence—crafting frameworks for auditing AI systems and championing ways to use AI to streamline process execution.
Industry press often describes him as an “internal optimist” who believes technology-enabled accountability can narrow economic, political and social gaps worldwide.[4]
