Alexander "Alex" Henderson (1828–1886) was a theater manager and owner.

Early life

Alexander "Alex" Henderson was born on 20 January 1828 in Hesket-in-the-Forest, Cumbria, England, son of Sarah and Robert Henderson. He started working in the theater at a young age.

Career

As a theater manager, he moved to Australia, where he hired the actresses Maria, Carrie, and Sarah Nelson, granddaughters of composer Sidney Nelson. He remarried in 1853, marrying Maria Nelson. His second marriage produced two daughters: Caroline Sidney (mother of actress May Hallatt) and Effie Adelaide Rowlands (mother of actress Meggie Albanesi).

In 1864, he opened and managed the Theatre Royal in Birkenhead. Later, he managed Prince of Wales's Theatre in Liverpool, where actress and producer Lydia Thompson joined his company. In August 1868, the company sailed to the United States, touring successfully until protests against burlesque increased. In 1876, he purchased the Folly Theater, and it became a burlesque house, with Thompson in the lead roles. The first piece was a production of *Bluebeard*. They separated, but the two continued to work together.

Personal life

On 15 January 1847, he married Sarah Ellen Boughey, and they had a daughter. He later married Lydia Thompson. He was the father of actress Carrie Sidney, writer Effie Adelaide Rowlands, and actress Blanche Massey. He was also grandfather to actresses May Hallatt and Meggie Albanesi.

Outside of his marriages, he had several children: with actress Blanche Massey (1868–1929), with actress Rose Massey; Alexander Francis Vere Henderson (1866–), with Sophia A. Hephzibah; and Alexander Olaf Henderson (1885–1954), with Hilda Creyke.

He died at 57, on 1 February 1886 in Cannes, French Riviera, France.
