Alex Witchel

Alex Witchel is an American journalist, best known for her cultural and style profiles during the 25 years she spent as a reporter and columnist for The New York Times[1]. In addition to Onstage and Off, the column she wrote about the theater for the Weekend section, she wrote Counterintelligence for Sunday Styles and originated the Feed Me column for the Dining section. As a reporter for that section, she was nominated for a James Beard Award[2]. She was also a staff writer for The Sunday Times Magazine and has written for Vanity Fair, The Washington Post, New York, Vogue, Elle and Town & Country, among other publications.

Witchel is the author of two novels, “Me Times Three” (Knopf/National Best Seller) and “The Spare Wife” (Knopf) and two books about her mother and sister: “Girls Only: Secrets, Squabbles, Tunafish and Other Facts of Family Life” (Random House) and “All Gone: A Memoir of My Mother’s Dementia. With Refreshments.” (Riverhead Books).

Starting in 2019, Witchel worked as a producer of her first film, Wild Mountain Thyme[3]. A love story written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, it stars Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan, Christopher Walken and Jon Hamm and was shot on location in County Mayo, Ireland[4]. The film is due for theatrical release in 2021.

At Wheaton College, Norton, Mass, Witchel was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English Writing/Literature in 1979. She received her M.F.A. from the Theater Management program at the Yale School of Drama in 1982[5]. Prior to her journalism career, Witchel worked as a story editor for Rastar Productions at Columbia Pictures and for The Shubert Organization as a Broadway house manager at the Imperial Theatre (Dreamgirls) and the Shubert Theatre (A Chorus Line).

Witchel married the journalist and producer Frank Rich in 1991[6]. She has two stepsons, the writers Nathaniel Rich and Simon Rich. She and her husband live in New York City.
