Alexander J. Newall is a British writer, director, actor, and CEO of Rusty Quill Ltd, a UK-based entertainment production company and podcast network. He is popularly known for co-creatingThe Magnus Archives, a horror anthology audio drama, and its sequel The Magnus Protocol.

Career

During his time at the University of Nottingham, Newall participated in the Improvisation Society as Creative Director and Treasurer, along with obtaining his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English studies. Newall then went on to attend the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama from 2011 - 2012 where he obtained his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media..[1].

From 2012 - 2015 Newall was associated with Casual Violence Comedy as a Director, Script-Editor, and Producer[2]

Newall founded Rusty Quill Ltd. in June 2015 then launched Rusty Quill Gaming, a collaborative “actual play” tabletop RPG podcast with Newall as the Games Master[3]. Rusty Quill Ltd. has launched 19 shows and has helped originate 56 shows through the RQ Network since it's creation.

Rusty Quill's second podcast The Magnus Archives[4], a horror anthology written and created by Jonathan Sims, launched in March 2016[3][5]. Newall participated as Co-Creator, Director, Story Editor, and Voice Actor, playing fictional character Martin Blackwood[6]. The audio drama ran for a total of 200 episodes (+ bonus content)[7] before it's conclusion in 2021 and has amassed more than 100 million downloads on Spotify as of 2025.[8]

In November 2022, a Kickstarter campaign was run to fund a sequel for The Magnus Archives, called The Magnus Protocol [9][10]. The aim was to raise £15,000 (USD). The final value raised was £718,641 with 11,215 backers.

In 2024, The Magnus Protocol began its run, releasing 30 episodes for Season 1, with Season 2 beginning in February 2025[11]. The show is co-written by Sims and Alexander J Newall, and presents a "side-quel" to The Magnus Archives.

Personal Life

Newall leads a private life and posts infrequently on social media, though is most active on X (previously Twitter)[12]. He is based in the UK where he lives with his spouse Hannah Brankin[13][14] and dog Ripley[15]. Newall maintains his desire to be a "professional geek" and cites his stubbornness as the reason for his success[16]
