Alexander Vasyliovych Kulyk (Олександр Васильович Кулик; 24 May 1957 – 1 March 2022) was a Ukrainian track cycling coach. He became Honored Coach of the Ukrainian SSR in 1988.[1][2]

Biography

Kulyk was born in 1957 in the village of Seredyna-Buda. He graduated from the National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport in 1979.[1]

He was a trainer in Sumy. He trained Aleksandr Kirichenko who won the gold medal in the men's track time trial event at the 1988 Summer Olympics as a member of the Soviet Union Olympic team. The same year, Kulyk became Honored Coach of the Ukrainian SSR in 1988.[1] The next year Kirichenko won the bronze medal at the 1989 UCI Track Cycling World Championships and became world champion at the 1990 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.[1][3] He also trained, among others, Oleksandr Fedenko who won the silver medal in the men's team pursuit event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as a member of the Ukrainian Olympic team.[2][4]

He later worked as the director of a sports school.[5]

Kulyk was killed in an attack on 1 March 2022 during a mission evacuating people from Kyiv during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, aged 64.[6][7]

The son of Kulyk is Andriy Kulyk, who became the 2019 national champion.[7]
