Alexander Prezioso (born September 24, 1977) is an American author, publisher, and illustrator. Among his works are Poetic Soldiers, Never Eat a Cactus Sandwich, The Tale of Milo, and Avabel & the Kingdom of Elytha. Alex is also a U.S. Army Combat Veteran, with over 27 years of service.
Early Life
Alexander Prezioso was born in Nyack, New York on September 24, 1977, the son of Alan and Catherine Prezioso. He has a younger brother, Nicholas E. Prezioso, a middle school English teacher.
Alex grew up in the Town of Waywayanda, and attended the Minisink Valley School system. While a junior in high school, Alex joined the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (AJROTC) program, and enlisted in the Army Reserve. He attended Basic Training in the summer of 1995, between his junior and senior year at high school, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. In the fall of 1996, Alex attended Valley Forge Military Academy & College (VFMAC), and enrolled in the ROTC Early Commissioning program. As a cadet, he later transferred from the Army Reserve into the Pennsylvania Army National Guard serving as the acting company Executive Officer for the 328th Forward Support Battalion in Pottstown, PA. In 1998, Alex was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army, and graduated from VFMAC with an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice. Alex then attended the State University at Albany, and transferred to Delta Company, 1-105th Infantry, New York Army National Guard, in Troy, New York, where he served as a TOW (Tubular Launched Optically Tracked Wire Guided Missile) Platoon Leader. In the spring of 2001, Alex graduated from SUNY Albany, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice. Later that year, he attended the Infantry Officer Basic Course (IOBC) in Fort Benning, GA. While attending IOBC, Alex was participating in a training exercise when his tactical officer informed Alex and his squad about the 9/11 attacks.
Career
In January 2002, Alex volunteered for State Active Duty serving on a security detail at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Westchester, New York. While serving on this mission, in the summer of 2003, Alex was notified about his involuntary transfer into the 2-108th Infantry Battalion located in Utica, New York. He was transferred to serve as the Headquarters & Headquarters Company Executive Officer on a deployment to Iraq.
After returning home from the deployment in 2005, adjusting to civilian life was difficult for Alex. He endured many sleepless nights with no outlet in the wee hours of the night. As a therapeutic way to express his thoughts and feelings, Alex began working on writing Poetic Deployment, to tell his story and share his experience and feelings. He eventually self-published his book, and then began his journey of helping others express themselves artistically through writing, as a way to cope with similar experiences.
Since Alex’s return home from his first deployment to Iraq, he branch transferred to the Military Police, and commanded the 727th Law and Order Detachment and the Headquarters Company of the 104th Military Police Battalion. Alex then returned to Iraq for a second tour serving as the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Antiterrorism Force Protection (AT/FP) Officer. In September 2007, while Alex was deployed, Alex's mother read one of his poems during a 9/11 commemoration event.[1] held at Thomas Bull Memorial Park, located in Pine Bush, New York.
In 2008, Alex branch transferred to the Adjutant General Corp, and served as the Deputy G1 for 53rd Troop Command in New York, where he was recognized by the Adjutant General of the New York Army National Guard for developing a mobile app[2][3] to help Service Members find jobs[4]. After serving in this position for 5 years, Alex was offered an active-duty tour in Virginia, to serve as the Deputy Product Director for Increment I of the Integrated Personnel Pay System – Army (IPPS-A) acquisition program, where he earned the Army's Meritorious Service Medal for his efforts on the program[5]
Alex transitioned off active duty in the fall of 2015, into a contractor role on the IPPS-A program as the System Deployment Manager for CACI International, Inc. This was Alex's first civilian job after serving 14 years on active duty missions, tours, and deployments. He was responsible for developing the mobile app for the U.S. Army's IPPS-A program for Apple and Android devices. In July 2017, Major Prezioso was recognized by the New York Mets during a home game in Citi Field for achieving 19 years in service.[6]
In 2020, Alex was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel while deployed to Kuwait with the 42nd Infantry Division. He was able to see his promotion order in IPPS-A while using the mobile app he developed for the program. He was recognized as one of the programs "Best of the Best." He served as the Task Force Spartan & Division Safety Officer, and was recognized by the ARCENT Safety Director for managing a comprehensive and efficient Command Safety Program. During a podcast interview, MAJ Prezioso discussed his 101 Critical Days of Summer campaign that focused on safety during summer months in the desert[7][8]
Today, Alex continues to serve on the IPPS-A program as a Senior Business Analyst managing the cost, schedule and performance for the Training, Deployment, and Sustainment teams. He also is serving as the Deputy Director of Aviation and Safety for the New York Army National Guard. Alex has a passion for encouraging and helping first time authors self-publish their work. He currently lives in Connecticut with his wife Bree Ann Prezioso, and their three children, Brayden, Landon, and Avery.
