Alexander R. Marmureanu (born August 30, 1962) is a Romanian-American thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, chief executive officer and founder of California Heart & Lung Surgery Medical Center, located in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The medical center opened in 2002 and provides advanced thoracic and cardiovascular surgical procedures. Prior to opening California Heart & Lung Surgery Medical Center, he served as a clinical instructor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCLA Medical Center, from Jul 2002 – Jul 2003. He then served as the Medical Director of the Thoracic Surgery Center for Century City Medical Center (Jan 2003 – Jan 2004), Valley Presbyterian Hospital (Jul 2009 – Jul 2010) and California Hospital Medical Center (Jul 2011 – Jul 2012).
Marmureanu is nationally and internationally recognized in the field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and has authored several research papers and clinical publications. He is active in both local and international charitable causes and has been photographed at these events next to celebrities such as Bill Gates Leonardo Di Caprio, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson, Paris Hilton, Jason Statham, Warren Beatty, Steven Spielberg, Silvester Stallone and many more. He has appeared as a guest speaker on several TV and radio shows, where he discussed the benefits of innovative surgical techniques as well as the advantages of minimally invasive surgery for thoracic and cardiovascular patients. Marmureanu practices cardiothoracic surgery in four hospitals, where he performs over 500 surgical cases per year. He is a member of multiple organizations, boards, and committees, as well as an invited speaker/visiting professor both nationally and internationally.
Personal[edit]
Marmureanu was born in Baile Govora, Romania, and emigrated to the United States in 1989, at the age of 28, settling in New York and receiving an internship in General Surgery at Mount Sinai - NYU Medical Center. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
Education[edit]
Marmureanu obtained his MD degree at the University of Craiova School of Medicine in 1988, followed by a fellowship in 1988 and a residency in 1993, both done at the same University. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, he decided to leave Romania and move to America to study medicine. In 1994 he started an Internship in General Surgery at Mount Sinai - NYU Medical Center, followed by a residency in 1995, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 1997. In 1998 he became a Senior Resident of the NYU Department of Surgery, and one year later Chief Resident of the same department and institution. From 2000 to 2002 he was a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow at the UCLA Medical Center, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
