Alexander Shenkin

Alexander Frederick Shenkin (born March 23, 1971) is an assistant research professor with a background in ecology, electrical engineering, and computer science. He is known for his work in ecology, particularly in the areas of ecosystems and relative species abundance. Shenkin has held various roles, including postdoctoral researcher, entrepreneur, and engineer.

Biography

Shenkin was born in Oakland. He attended Berkeley High School from 1985 to 1989 and later pursued his education at several prestigious institutions. He obtained a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Doctor of Philosophy in ecology from the University of Florida. His doctoral thesis was titled "Fates of Trees and Forests in Bolivia Subjected to Selective Logging, Fire, and Climate Change."

Shenkin's professional career began as an engineer at Lockheed Martin from 1995 to 1998. He then worked as a programmer until 2004 and later as an electrical engineer until 2000. From 2002 to 2005, he served as a part of Conservation International. His academic pursuits continued with postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford from 2013 to 2021, under the supervision of Yadvinder Malhi. Shenkin is also a fellow of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and a member of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation.

He was an assistant research professor at Northern Arizona University and a researcher at the University of Oxford Environmental Change Institute. He is the founder and CEO of Floe and SelvaFlux, and the director of Ecosci. His work focuses on ecology, ecosystems, and physical geography.
