Alexandre Louis d'Orléans[lower-alpha 1] (c. 2 June 1673 – 16 March 1676),[1][2] was a short-lived son of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans and Elisabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate. Styled Duke of Valois, he died at the age of three.
Life[edit]
Born on 2 June 1673 in Saint-Cloud, France,[1][3] Alexandre Louis d'Orléans was the son of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans and his second wife, Elisabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate. He was their first child; his younger full siblings were Philippe, the future Duke of Orléans, and Élisabeth Charlotte, the future duchess of Lorraine. In later years, Elisabeth Charlotte would describe the birth of Alexandre Louis as an ordeal, emphasizing the reluctance she had when performing her marital duties.[4]
He was baptized in Paris on 10 April 1674, and was styled as Duke of Valois during his short life. Alexandre Louis died on the night of 16 March 1676 at the Palais-Royal. His body was taken to the Basilica of Saint-Denis, and his heart to the Val-de-Grace.[1]
