Alexandru Șabalin (born 23 in Chișinău[1][2]) is a Moldovan cyclist, active during the 1990s and 2000s.
Biography
In 1999, Alexandru Sabalin finished eighth in the junior (under 19) time trial and eleventh in the road race at the Junior World Championships. He also won the Tre Ciclistica Bresciana. The following year, he represented Moldova at the European Championships and the U23 World Championships (under 23) in road cycling. He also competed at the amateur level in Italy with the Gavardo Tecmor team.
In 2001, he again participated in the World Championships, but this time in the elite category. He then moved to France in 2002, joining VC Beauvais Oise. During this season, he won the Tour of Romania [3]. In 2003 he was in the start list for the time trial event in 2003 UCI Road World Championships [4]. Two years later, he joined VC La Pomme Marseille. Under his new team, he achieved success as an amateur, winning the Tour de Franche-Comté and a stage of the Cinturó de l'Empordà. He also won the Tour Alsace in 2005.
In the 2006 season, he finished third in Paris-Mantes-en-Yvelines and fourth in the Tropicale Amissa Bongo. However, he tested positive for strychnine during the Flèche du Sud on May 26. As a result, the UCI suspended him for one year[5]. He never returned to competition after this suspension.
