Boris Vladimirovich Alexeev (Russian: Бори́с Влади́мирович Алексе́ев) is a Russian theoretical physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation, Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of Russia, Honorary Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation.

Biography and Education

Born on May 2, 1938 in Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Moscow Region. He entered the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), where he graduated from the Aeromechanical Faculty in 1961.

Academician A. A. Dorodnitsyn, director of the newly formed first Computer Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences, selected the most capable students of MIPT for his Center. Among them was B. V. Alekseev. Under the supervision of A. A. Dorodnitsyn, B. V. Alekseev's diploma thesis was defended at MIPT and, in several years, his PhD thesis (the specialty "mechanics of liquid, gas and plasma") was also defended at the MIPT (in 1964).

Academic work

Based on the materials of the PhD dissertation, the monograph "Boundary layer with chemical reactions" was published in 1967, completely based on the idea formulated by B. V. Alexeev of a mathematical experiment on the example of the entry of the warheads of long-range missiles into the dense layers of the atmosphere. B. V. Alekseev created numerical methods for solving nonlinear partial differential equations and performed calculations of burning and sublimating bodies of rotation. These calculations were later used in modeling the flow around reusable spacecraft. The monograph was translated in the USA.

In computer science, Alexeev was the first representative from the USSR in the International Working Group on the Use of Computers for the Collection and Processing of Numerical Data for Science and Technology in the international organization CODATA and actively participated in the initiative work on the creation of Information Centers in the USSR. For more than 20 years, he worked as an assistant to VINITI in the departments of mechanics and physics.

He made a fundamental contribution to modern physical kinetics. In 1973, a senior researcher at the Computing Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Boris V Alexeev, defended his doctoral dissertation on the specialty "Theoretical and mathematical physics". The materials of his doctoral dissertation are reflected in his monograph "Mathematical Kinetics of Reacting Gases" (Nauka Publishing House, 1982). Simultaneously with his work at the Computer Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he began teaching at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI); since 1969 - Associate Professor in the Department of "Heat Engines"). Since 1973, Professor at the Department of "Physics", B. V. Alexeev was the head of the Department of Physics of the MAI, and since 1983 – the Department of Physics of the Moscow Lomonosov Academy of Fine Chemical Technology.

B. V. Alexeev developed numerical methods for solving thermo-physical problems leading to nonlinear integro-differential equations. He applied Monte Carlo methods for solving self-consistent thermal and electro-physical problems, in particular, for investigation of the interaction of high-power electron beams with dense media. An exceptional contribution belongs to B. V. Alekseev in the creation and development of the kinetic theory of reacting gases. He generalized the Boltzmann equation for a mixture of gases with chemical reactions and constructed perturbation methods. A generalized Enskog method is proposed that allows us to obtain the transfer coefficients in a chemically non-equilibrium mixture of gases at an arbitrary ratio of elastic and inelastic collisions.

Alexeev is one of the founders of nonlocal physics. The generalized (non-local) Boltzmann equation was derived by B. V. Alekseev in 1987 and is the basis of generalized Boltzmann physical kinetics (GBPK). In the following years, research on GBPK was carried out very intensively, and his researches are the world leading in this field of physical kinetics.

He has lectured on CBPK as a visiting professor in Bulgaria, three times in the United States (including at the Universities of Alabama, Auburn, and the Marshall Aviation and Space Center, Huntsville, Red Stone), and five times since the beginning of the nineties, he was elected as a first-class professor (specialty: physical mechanics) at the University of Provence (Laboratory of Non-equilibrium Media, Marseille, France). He is a member of the Scientific Council of the American Biographical Institute (ABI USA Medal of Honor, Person of the Year 1999).

Honors

In 1987, he was elected a member of the USSR National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (now the Russian National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics). In 1988, he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR. In 1993, he was elected to the International Academy of Higher School Sciences (Section of General Physics and Astronomy), the New York Academy of Sciences. Since 1994, he has been awarded a state scholarship for outstanding scientists. B. V. Alexeev was a member of the Organizing Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Moscow Regional Department and Deputy Chairman of the Physics, Electronics and Energy Section. About 10 years worked as a member of the Expert Commission of the USSR and a member of the Academic Council of the Institute of high temperatures USSR Academy of Sciences. Member of the Scientific Councils of MITHT, Head of the Center for Theoretical Foundations of Nanotechnology, member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Ecological Systems and Devices", Associate Editor of the journal "Advances in Astrophysics".

Author of more than 280 publications, including 20 books on the problems of transport processes in neutral and ionized gases, liquids and solids.
