Alexey "Professor" Lebedinsky (Russian: Алексе́й И́горевич Лебеди́нский; born May 28, 1968, Leningrad) is a Soviet and Russian singer, keyboard player, songwriter, photography artist , advertising figure. He became widely known in the mid-1990s in Russia and many post-Soviet countries due to songs that he performs with a growl singing, among them - “I'll kill you boatman”, “Doche”, and "Komariki" (with the rock-band "Zhuki").

Early life[edit]

Alexey began playing the piano at the age of 10, and composing music at the age of 15. In 1983 he graduated from the Leningrad City Music School #32, and then performed in front of Svyatoslav Richter at the Great Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic, as the best USSR Music School alumni. At Richter's insistence, he continued to study at Eliso Virsaladze class, but decided not to pursue a career as a classical pianist later on.

Musical career[edit]

In 1985, at the recommendation of Boris Grebenshchikov, he recorded his first track at Andrei Tropillo studio.

In 1989 he played keyboard with Maxim Leonidov at the music band "Sobranie Sochineniy. Then worked closely with Mikhail Boyarsky.

In 1990, he founded the music band "The Twins", that represented St. Petersburg city at the 1992 "White Nights in Venice" festival.

Since 1991 he has worked as an arranger at the recording studio of the Union of Composers.

In 1995, after the release of the song "I'll kill you, boatman" and the joint album "Davay, davay" with the group "Russian size" with ironic cover versions of famous hits, Professor Lebedinsky quickly started gaining popularity in Russia and neighboring countries and to conquer the top of radio charts.

The pseudonym "Professor Lebedinsky" came from one time, when calling a taxi, Alexey introduced himself as "Professor Lebedinsky" - so the taxi would get to him as soon as possible. So the nickname “professor” was firmly attached to Alexey, which later became his stage name.

In 1998 - the album "Laugh or Cry" was released and broadcasted on TV.

In 1999, a video for the song "Dubak-January" with the participation of Roman Trakhtenberg, and a video for the parody "Tired Toys are Sleeping," also with the participation of Trakhtenberg, was released on television.

In autumn 2004, together with the music band "Russkiy Razmer" and Dmitry Nagiyev, he recorded a parody song "Ya yeyo hoi" (to the melody of the song "Dragostea din tei" by the Moldovan musical pop group "O-Zone"). This parody (the common name is "I'm dancing drunk on the table") occupied the top of the radio charts for 7-12 months.

In 2005, he celebrated the 10th anniversary of his musical career at the concert hall "Oktyabrsky" in his native St. Petersburg.

In September 2007 the album of Professor Lebedinsky "Hello again" was released. After 5 days on the air, the song "Vovkina now" got into the top ten list of radio "Chanson" and the constant rotation of "Road radio". It was called by critics one of Lebedinsky's best songs.

Also in 2007, Alexey Lebedinsky worked as an invited host at "Vremechko" television show on the TV Center channel.

In 2013, after a long break, a new lyric song "If no-love" was released and broadcasted on music TV channels.

Professor Lebedinsky is one of the most ardent critics of Vladimir Putin presidency and the current Russian government.

In 2014 Lebedinsky left Russia and moved to the United States for political reasons.

Lebedinsky has a daughter Veronica born in 1997.

Photography career[edit]

Lebedinsky began his professional photography career in 2000. He began to exhibit his first photographs on a well-known Internet resource, where professional photographers reside. Russian photojournalist Sergei Maksimishin defined his style as a minimalist genre. On the recommendation of Maximishin, Alexey began to cooperate with the Izvestia newspaper. In September 2002, the first personal photo exhibition "The Focus of Professor Lebedinsky" opened at the Izvestia media center.

In the same 2002 the cover of Chris de Burgh's album "Timing is Everything" was decorated with a photo art of Alexei Lebedinsky.

Without leaving his musical touring activity, since 2002, Alexey has been constantly publishing in newspapers and magazines, making custom portrait, genre and advertising photography. Alexey is also involved in shooting Russian and world stars: Steve Howe (Yes), The Tiger Lillies, Sting, Bryan Adams, Phil Collins, Cesaria Evora, Avishai Cohen, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Hopper, Kenny Garrett, Shahin Novrasli, Sergey Ignashevich, Leonid Agutin, Angelica Varum, Vladimir Kuzmin, Ilya Lagutenko, Andrey Makarevich, and many others.

In 2005, he released the signature photoshoots for Porsche, and the Lukoil calendar, as well as his first author's photo book "Photo Album No.1"

In 2007, Canon presented Lebedinsky at the Photoforum 2007 exhibition.

In 2009, the gallery at Mosfilm hosted a personal exhibition of photographs by Alexei "Professor" Lebedinsky "Frame by frame: Indochina". The gallery represented only part of a larger project in which Lebedinsky photographically explores Vietnam, Cambodia and the capital of Thailand, Bangkok.

In 2012, with the support of Nikon, ProLab, RusHydro and the Mosfilm film studio, a personal exhibition-vernissage of portraits and interior photographs by Alexei “Professor” Lebedinsky “Stenograms” was held.

In November 2014, an exhibition of Professor Lebedinsky's unusual photographs entitled "My Petersburg" was held in St. Petersburg.

Advertising career[edit]

Since 1991, A. Lebedinsky has created and voiced hundreds of advertising audio and video clips, and soundtracks for television and radio. In 2005, the author's advertisements and calendars were shot for the companies "Porsche" and "Lukoil".

In 2009-2011, at the request of the president of OAO NK Rosneft, he was the company's advertising and PR adviser.

In 2011-2014 he worked as an independent consultant on advertising and PR projects.
