Alexzandra Sarmiento
Alexzandra Sarmiento is an American actress, dancer and choreographer from New York.[1] She is best known as associate choreographer for the UK version of In The Heights, choreographer and associate director for Bonnie & Clyde as well as playing the role of Connie in A Chorus Line at the London Palladium.
Early life and education
Sarmiento trained at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (2007-2011), gaining a Dance Major,[2] in New York and the State University of New York Purchase Conservatory of Dance.[3]
Theatre credits
As an actress and dancer her first role was that of Connie in the UK production of A Chorus Line at the London Palladium in 2013.[4] The cast was led by John Partridge, Scarlett Strallen as Cassie and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt and was directed by Bob Avian, co-choreographer for the original version of the musical and long time friend of its creator, Michael Bennett.
In 2014 Sarmiento took part in the UK tour of Fame as Grace Lambchops’ Lamb, starting its run at the New Wimbledon Theatre in London. The original story of the musical was updated for this version, keeping original songs like "Fame".[5] Cast included Jodie Steele, Sasi Strallen and Molly Stewart.[6]
In the same year she joined the cast of the UK premiere of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In The Heights at the Southwark Playhouse. The show was a success and transferred to the Kings Cross Theatre the following year, extending its run until October 2016.[7] Notable cast members were David Bedella as Kevin, Sam Mackay as Usnavi, Eve Polycarpou as Abuela, Joe Aaron Reid as Benny and Cleve September making his professional debut as Sonny.[8] The original show ran on Broadway from 2008 until 2011 and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four, including Best Musical.[9]
The UK version of the show won three Olivier Awards in 2016, including Outstanding Achievement in Music, Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for David Bedella and Best Theatre Choreographer for Drew McOnie.[10] The show was also nominated for 9 WhatsOnStage Awards in the same year.[11]
In 2016 Sarmiento was dance captain of the Leeds production of Strictly Ballroom, choreographed by In the Heights veteran Drew McOnie.[12] The following year she joined the cast of the UK premiere of Hamilton as swing and dance captain.[13]

Choreographer
Sarmiento started as an associate choreographer[14] in the 2015 UK premiere of In The Heights, where she was also a swing and cover for the role of Carla.[15]
In 2022 she choreographed the musical But I'm a Cheerleader, performing at the Turbine Theatre.[16] In the same year she was assistant director as well as choreographer for the concert version of the musical Chess.[17] She was also the assistant choreographer of the Open Air Theatre version of Legally Blonde, directed by Lucy Moss and starring Courtney Bowman as Elle Woods and Michael Ahomka-Lindsay as Emmett.[18]
Sarmiento was associate director/choreographer for Bonnie & Clyde which started with a sold-out concert version with Jeremy Jordan and a short run at the Arts Theatre, and then transferred at the Garrick Theatre, with Frances Mayli McCann as Bonnie and Jordan Luke Gage as Clyde.[19]
In 2023 Sarmiento choreographed a new, gender-bending version of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying at the Southwark Playhouse. Gabrielle Friedman starred as J. Pierrepont Finch, with Tracie Bennett as J. B. Biggley, Allie Daniel as Rosemary Pilkington and Michelle Visage as the voice of the book.[20] In the same year Sarmiento was also the movement director of Then, Now & Next, starring Alice Fearn and directed by Julie Atherton.
Sarmiento was associate director and choreographer of the European premiere of Death Note The Musical in concert, running at the Lyric Theatre from 7 to 10 September 2023.[21] The cast for the show included Adam Pascal as Ryuk, Aimee Atkinson as Rem, Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Light, Dean John-Wilson as L and Frances Mayli McCann as Misa. In the Lyric run George Maguire took over the role of Ryuk.[22]
