Alfred Lela is an Albanian journalist, political analyst, and author. He is widely known in the Albanian media landscape as the founder of the news outlet Politiko.al, his tenure as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Mapo, and his work as a television host. More recently, he has served as the Director of Communications for the Democratic Party of Albania.
Media Career
Lela built his career in the Albanian print and digital media, establishing a reputation as a center-right political commentator. For several years, he served as the editor-in-chief of Mapo, a prominent Albanian daily newspaper and magazine known for its political and cultural analysis.[1]
Following his departure from Mapo, Lela founded Politiko.al, an independent online news and political analysis portal based in Tirana. Under his direction, the platform became known for daily news, opinion columns, and its early adoption of the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) standards.[2]
In addition to his written journalism, Lela has been a regular fixture on Albanian television. He hosted the political talk show PolitikOn on RTV Ora, where he moderated debates on current affairs, governance, and social issues in Albania and Kosovo.[3]
Public Life and Politics
Lela is an active participant in Albanian public discourse. In May 2020, he gained widespread national and international media attention when he was violently detained by state police during the protests against the demolition of the National Theatre of Albania in Tirana.[4] Lela was present to cover and peacefully protest the demolition when the clash occurred; his detention drew condemnation from media rights organizations regarding police brutality against journalists.[5]
Lela later formally entered the political sphere, aligning with the center-right opposition. He was appointed as the Director of Press and Communications for the Democratic Party of Albania (Partia Demokratike), acting as a primary spokesperson and media strategist for the party.[6]
Publications
Lela has authored several books focusing on Albanian politics, society, and historical transitions.
