Algarvian Portuguese (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a dialect of Portuguese spoken in the Portuguese region of Algarve.

Characteristics

Most of the features of Algarvian are shared with Alentejan:

  • The diphthong /ou̯/ is monophthongized to [o]:
sou /ˈsou̯/ > [so] 'I am'
  • The diphthong /ei̯/ is monophthongized to [e], except before other vowels, when in the last syllable of a word, or generally before /t/:
maneira /mɐˈnei̯ɾɐ/ > [mɐˈneɾɐ] 'way'
areia /ɐˈɾei̯ɐ/ > [ɐˈɾei̯ɐ] 'sand'
seis /sei̯ʃ/ > [sei̯ʃ] 'six'
  • The diphthong /ai̯/ is monophthongized to [a] before "x" (/ʃ/):
caixa /ˈkai̯ʃɐ/ > [ˈkaʃɐ] 'box'
  • /b/, /d/, and /ɡ/ are always pronounced as stops and not as fricatives:
manteiga /mɐ̃ˈtei̯ɡɐ/ > [mɐ̃ˈteɡɐ] 'butter'
idade /iˈdadɨ/ > [iˈdad] 'age'
abrir /ɐˈbɾiɾ/ > [ɐˈbɾiɾ] 'to open'
  • Function words that contain diphthongs have unstressed varieties where the diphthongs are monophthongized, losing the second element:[1]
eu sei /eu̯ ˈsei̯/ > [e ˈsei̯] 'I know'
não sei /nɐ̃ũ̯ ˈsei̯/ > [nɐ̃ ˈsei̯] 'I don't know'
o meu pai /u meu̯ ˈpai̯/ > [u me ˈpai̯] 'my father'

Features specific to Algarvian:

  • Final unstressed "-o" is eliminated.
tudo /ˈtudu/ > [ˈtud] 'all, everything'
  • Final "s", "z" are pronounced [ʒ] when followed by a vowel, instead of [z]:
os olhos /uʃˈɔʎuʃ/ > [uʒˈɔʎʃ] 'the eyes'
