Ali Azhar Damarrosydi (born 26 September 2005), known professionally as Ali Azhar D, is an Cultural and historical activists in Indonesia, city government officials in the culture and tourism sector, Indonesian digital content creator and historian specializing in the documentation of Surabaya's local history and culture. He gained prominence through his educational content focusing on the historical and cultural aspects of Surabaya, East Java. [1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Ali Azhar completed his secondary education at MTs Excellent Amanatul Ummah (2016-2020) and MA CI Amanatul Ummah Surabaya (2020-2022). He initially enrolled in Information System and Business at Ciputra University in 2022.[6] before transferring to Communication Studies in 2023.[7][8][9][10]

Career

Digital content and historical documentation

Ali Azhar D began documenting Surabaya's history through digital platforms after completing his Islamic boarding school education. His research methodology incorporates three primary sources: the Surabaya Sightseeing and City Tour guide, "Soerabia Tempo Doeloe" by Dukut Imam Widodo, and oral histories from local caretakers and community members.[11][12][13]

His work has led to collaborations with various governmental institutions, including the Surabaya City Government and the Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth, and Sports (Disbudporapar).[14] Azhar has produced public service announcements for the Surabaya City Government, including a notable collaboration with Deputy Mayor Armuji on illegal online lending awareness.[15][16][17][18]

Film work

In 2024, Azhar worked as part of the behind-the-scenes team for "Spiral," directed by Rosihan Amril Farouqi and produced by 8 Scene Pictures. The film received recognition as an Official Selection at both the Indonesia Western Australia Film Festival (IWAFF) 2025 and Muda Award Moviement 2024.[19][20][21][22]

Awards and Recognition

In 2022, Azhar received the "Student With The Most Credit Point" award from Universitas Ciputra Surabaya. He later earned recognition for "The Most Viewed Campaign Video in Intercultural Communication" at Fikomrade's Day Commchella 2024, presented by Prof. Dr. Burhan Bungin, M.Si., PhD., CIQaR., CIQnR.[23][24][25][26][27]

Ali has received several awards and nominations recognizing his talent and contributions to film and art:

  • Official selection at the Indonesia Western Australia Film Festival (IWAFF) 2025 for the film “Spiral”.
  • Muda Award at the Himikom Unram Festival for “Spiral”.

Content Creation Approach

Ali Azhar maintains a selective approach to commercial partnerships, focusing primarily on collaborations related to culture, youth development, sports, and tourism. His content spans various formats, including historical documentaries, daily vlogs, and educational videos about Surabaya's public transportation system.

In addition to his historical content, Azhar incorporates his Islamic education background from Amanatul Ummah into his digital presence, creating content that bridges historical, cultural, and spiritual themes.[28]

Case

In May 2024, Indonesian TikTok content creator Ali Azhar D revealed a significant financial mismanagement incident involving his family's business expansion in Surabaya, East Java. The case gained prominence in Indonesian media due to Azhar's social media influence and its illustration of small business fraud challenges in Indonesia. The incident began when the Azhar family business, seeking to expand its operations, opened a new branch in Lakarsantri, Surabaya, with an initial investment of 50 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately US$3,200).[32][33]

During a pre-Eid al-Fitr audit, the family discovered substantial financial irregularities, revealing losses of 22 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately US$1,400). The investigation showed that the invested capital had been misappropriated by the individual tasked with managing the new branch operations. Despite Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) Article 372 providing legal recourse, which allows for maximum four-year imprisonment or fines up to 900,000 rupiah for embezzlement cases, the Azhar family chose not to pursue criminal charges. Instead, they opted to resolve the matter privately by converting the misappropriated funds into a debt obligation for the responsible party.[34][35]

The incident gained public attention after Azhar shared his experience on social media platforms, using it to warn others about the risks of financial trust in business relationships. His public disclosure sparked broader discussions in Indonesian social media about financial fraud prevention and the challenges faced by small businesses during expansion phases. The case also highlighted a cultural preference among some Indonesian business owners to resolve financial disputes through private arrangements rather than legal channels. Ali Azhar D public statements emphasized the importance of maintaining strict oversight over financial matters, particularly in family-owned businesses attempting to expand their operations.[36][37][38]
