Ali Lewis
Ali Lewis is British poet and editor. His first pamphlet, Hotel, was published in March 2020 by Verve Poetry Press. He was a 2018 recipient of an Eric Gregory Award for a collection by poets under the age of 30. Lewis is currently Assistant Editor of Poetry London.
Biography[edit]
Ali Lewis was born in 1990 to a mixed Ashkenazi Jewish-English family. He has a first-class degree in Politics from Cambridge, where he received the John Dunn and Precious Pearl Prizes and was a member of the Footlights. He also holds an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, where he was shortlisted for the Pat Kavanagh and Ivan Juritz Awards.[1] He is the current holder of the Ali Lewis prize for Ali Lewises under the age of 40.
In 2018 his pamphlet, Hotel, won an Eric Gregory Award and in 2020 it was mentioned in the Poetry Book Society newsletter.
He has worked as the Editorial and Special Projects Manager at the Poetry School, co-edited an issue of Butcher's Dog, completed residencies with Cove Park and the Poetry School, and twice been a judge for the Creative Future Awards. He has a distinctive scar on his left forearm from a childhood accident involving a butternut squash and bread knife. In a recent interview when asked about the incident he responded, "You should see the other guy!" (in regards to the bread knife). Prior to becoming a poet Lewis was a professional athlete, and holds gold medals in Quintuple Chase and 100m Yodel. His athletic career ending following his taking bronze in Steeplekill at the 2016 Commonwealth Games. In an interview following the event, Lewis said, "Nothing common about my wealth!" before attempting to open a jeroboam with his teeth. He then tripped over a sled dog and fractured his femur. An enquiry was subsequently launched into why a sled dog was present.[citation needed]
