Aliagha Mammadli (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; 5 January 1958) is an anthropologist, Azerbaijan’s first Doctor of Anthropological Sciences, and a professor.[2] He heads the Department of Anthropology at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and is a recipient of the "Taraggi" Medal (2025). Since 2010, he has also served as a professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University.[3][4] He is the Deputy Chair of the Expert Council on History and Anthropology of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.[citation needed]
Among Mammadli’s principal scientific contributions are his identification and conceptualization of the essence and trajectory of modern ethnocultural processes in Azerbaijan, as well as his analysis of the key factors shaping contemporary interethnic relations within the country.[2]
Early life and education
Aliagha Mammadli was born on 5 January 1958 in Baku.[2]
He completed his secondary education in 1975 at Secondary School No.175 in the capital. That same year, he entered the Faculty of History at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute, where he studied from 1975 to 1979. From 1979 to 1981, he fulfilled his military service in the ranks of the Soviet Army. Upon returning from service, he began his professional career as a research associate at the Gobustan National Historical and Artistic Reserve, where he worked from 1981 to 1982. Beginning in 1982, Mammadli continued his academic and scientific work at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.[2]
Personal life
Aliagha Mammadli is married and has three children . He is the son of painter, member of Artists' Union of the USSR Ayyub Mammadov.[citation needed]
Career
From 1982 to 1984, Mammadli worked as a researcher-trainee at the Department of Ethnography of Moscow State University, and from 1985 to 1988 he pursued postgraduate (doctoral) studies at the same department. Upon completing his postgraduate program, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in December 1988 on the topic "Ethnocultural Processes in the Contemporary Azerbaijani Village" and was awarded the academic degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences. After returning to Baku, he continued his scholarly work at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
From 1982 to 1985, Mammadli served as a senior laboratory assistant in the Department of Soviet-Era Ethnography. Between 1985 and 1989, he worked as a junior research fellow in the Department of Ethnosociological Research, where he later held the position of senior research fellow from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996, he served as a leading research fellow in the same department. In 1996, he was appointed Head of the Department of Applied Ethnology. In 2003, he became Head of the Department of Ethnosociological Research. In 2018, he was appointed Head of the newly established Anthropology Center at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, which was later reorganized as the Department of Anthropologyd.[5]
In 2012, Mammadli defended his dissertation titled "Characteristics of Contemporary Ethnocultural Processes in Azerbaijan" and became the first scholar in Azerbaijan to earn the academic degree of Doctor of Anthropological Sciences.[2]In 2017, by decision of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, he was awarded the academic title of Professor.[2]
He has authored 110 scholarly articles published in national and international journals and edited volumes. He is also the author of six monographs and has served as the scientific editor of seven monographs. He currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Expert Council on History and Anthropology of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.[2]

Mammadli is a member of the editorial boards of the Ministry of Science and Education; "History, Human and Society" scientific-theoretical and scientific-methodological journal of Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University;[6] Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences "Social Sciences" Journal[7] and the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS "Tempus Pontem: Azerbaijan Journal of Archaeology and Anthropology" Journal.[8]
Teaching
Since 2010, Mammadli has served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University. He teaches several courses, including Ethnography, World Cultural Heritage, and Organization of the Protection of Archaeological Heritage.[4]
Under his academic supervision, seven PhD candidates have successfully completed their dissertations.[9]
