Alicia López Bruzos (born 29 March 1993) is a Spanish biologist and bioinformatician. She works at the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) and teaches genetics in the biology degree from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain).

Personal life and educational background

Alicia L. Bruzos was born in Lugo (Galicia, Spain) in 1993, although she spent her childhood in Viveiro where she attended Colegio Lois Tobio and IES Vilar Ponte. She is the daughter of a primary school teacher and a mine foreman.

During her childhood, she attended the Professional Conservatory of Music, obtaining the elementary degree with two specialisations: traverse flute and piano. She also participated in art and literature competitions, winning several awards during these years. At the age of 14, she participated in her first international exchange to learn French in Lannion (France), which continued a few years later with a summer scholarship from the Xunta de Galicia to learn French in Camblanes (France). At the age of 16, she was diagnosed with radial nerve paralysis and, during the following years, she underwent surgery three times.

She started university in 2011, and two years later, Alicia got an Erasmus scholarship to study one year abroad at Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), where she fell in love with evolutionary biology. She spent the summer working in the laboratory of Prof. Patrick Mardulyn.[1] and learning some basic molecular biology techniques. In 2015, she obtained a BSc. in biology from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain) after presenting her degree thesis with honours about photosynthesis variability under heat stress supervised by Rubén Retuerto (Ecology department).

Afterwards, she moved to Barcelona to do a specialisation in bioinformatics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain), which would lead to publishing her first article with some analyses of her master thesis that were comprised in a major publication of Nature [2] [3].

Scientific career

Alicia is a scientist researching the genetic causes of contagious metastases under the sea. In 2016, she started working in the laboratory of PhD. Jose Tubio, doing an internship and then enrolling in a PhD programme of Universidade de Vigo (Spain) funded by a PhD fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competivity (Ref. BES-2016-078166)[4]. Due to the transfer of the ERC Scuba Cancers project[5][6], she moved back to Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and enrolled in the Molecular Medicine PhD program.

Alicia made four research stays in other laboratories during her PhD. In 2018, she went to the laboratory of PhD. Michael Metzger of the Pacific Northwest Research Institute (Seattle, USA) to learn gene-editing techniques financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science. The following year, she moved to National University Ireland Galway (Ireland) to study the disseminated neoplasia of Irish cockles financed by Assemble Plus (grant agreement no. 730984). In 2020, she worked with the laboratory of Prof. David Posada where she learned phylogenomic and statistical techniques that she applied to her pre-doctoral research. Finally, in 2021 she moved to the laboratory of PhD. Young Seok Ju at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Daejeon, South Korea) financed by a travel grant of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds to learn about transcriptomics and cell-of-origin analysis.

Moreover, she is committed to bringing science from the laboratory to the streets, therefore, she actively participates in several scientific outreach activities:
