The all-party parliamentary group on Immigration Detention was established in June 2019.
It brings together over 30 parliamentarians from across Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, and Scottish National who share concerns about immigration detention in the UK.[1] Its official entry on the Houses of Parliament register can be found on the APPG Register..
Aims[edit]
The group aims to increase the level of knowledge within Parliament about detention and its impacts. It offers MPs and Peers opportunities to debate issues with relevant experts from outside Parliament, including people with lived experience of detention, as well as lawyers, medical professionals, academics and representatives from non-profit organisations.
Using the information gathered through its work, the APPG will advocate for evidence-based reforms to immigration detention policy, and for the welfare of detainees.
The list of members can be found on the appgdetention website.
Chaired[edit]
It is chaired by Alison Thewliss MP. The secretariat is the charity Medical Justice, a small Non-governmental organization based in London.
