All We’ll Ever Have (2019) is an autobiographical novel written by Evren D. Clive[1]. It is set in Namibia, England and Istanbul between the late seventies and present day.  The story focuses on the main character, Evren, and details her adoption, upbringing, and subsequent relationship with her birth brother.

Plot Summary

Evren was born in Namibia and raised on a cattle farm. At fourteen years old she learns she is adopted and her entire view of the world shifts. As an adult Evren goes on to backpack Europe, marry a Russian for visa purposes, move to England, and begin a career as a Child Protection Social Worker.

Evren makes contact with her birth family and flies back to Africa to meet them.  She later meets up with her birth brother again and thus begins an illicit relationship.

Issues raised

The book makes reference to social media platforms such as Facebook making it easier for adopted children to make contact with their birth relatives. Within the context of a Romance novel, the book briefly covers the subjects of Genetic Sexual Attraction, varying incest laws in different countries, and biblical views on incest.  The author is very firm in her belief that consensual sexual relationships between adults should not be viewed in the same context as sexual offences crimes[2].

Extract

“But this story has to be told.  Because this is not just a story about sex.  And what happened between us is only a small part of the story anyway, almost a buried chapter.  This is really a story about love. An ultimate, impossible, heart-breaking love.  An epic love.  A love many people spend their lifetimes searching for, but never finding”[3]

Critical Reception

The first ever review on Amazon, while positive “(I) couldn’t put it down… became so caught up in the author’s story I stayed up all night to finish…the experiences, descriptions and emotions of the main character suck you in and you want to know what happens next” questioned whether it is a true biographical account or a work of fiction.[4]
