Alvin Ray Harris (born August 29, 1996), is an American rapper, actor, businessman, and philanthropist. He is the founder of VaKu, LLC (stylized as VäKú[1]), which is also a term he created meaning "Indescribable Happiness". Harris co-founded an immersive experience event, Where Memories Are Made, in Dallas, TX.
Biography
Alvin Ray Harris was born and raised in the third ward of New Orleans in the Calliope Projects. He is the oldest of six children. Harris attended McDonogh 35 Senior High School, which was the first four-year high school for African Americans in Orleans Parish. Afterward, Harris earned a degree in Business Administration from Dillard University. His stage name, a play on the name of Hip-Hop artist Nelly & Earhart Boulevard, is an ode to his childhood experiences and community. At the age of 9, Harris was homeless due to Hurricane Katrina, which resulted in him relocating to over 5 cities in a matter of months. Harris credited this time period with inspiring him to become a philanthropist and community activist.
Career
Dear Diary (2013)
During his adolescence, Allay's father, who was an entrepreneur and popular drug dealer formerly known as 6 War Pook[2][3], bought a Focusrite audio box as an incentive for him to dismiss the temptations of street life that his childhood neighborhood presented. Allay still considered joining a gang until his older cousin was murdered in a drive-by shooting on Earhart Boulevard. Shortly after, Allay promised his father that he would focus on music and began to write poems and create songs as an outlet to express himself and avoid trouble.
In 2013, Allay Earhart decided not to attend his senior trip to Disney World but instead bought a Macbook computer for $500 to record and released his first demo entitled ‘Dear Diary[4]’ while in high school at the age of 16.
The Ku (2015)
In 2015, Allay Earhart decided to further the buzz he garnered in high school by attending college to build his network and expand his newly formed company VAKU. During the first week of school, Allay met Ron Davalos[5][6] who would become his business partner. The two decided to coordinate a group trip to Panama City Beach, FL for their first spring break. During this trip, Allay Earhart recorded his second demo entitled ‘The Ku[7]’ at Days Inn Hotel. His second project detailed his many intricate relationships with the women in his life.
Reaching All People's Ears [R.A.P.E.] (2016)
In 2016, Allay Earhart met Jackie Sumnell[8] who was his visual arts professor, he credited this course with teaching one how to use their art to change the status quo. During this time, Allay's close friend confessed that she had been raped after a college party on campus but no one believed her when she reported the incident. The conversation with his friend resulted in the release of his third project entitled 'Reaching All People's Ears' featuring the acronym R.A.P.E. Allay intended on shedding light on the tragedy by hopefully creating dialogue surrounding the sensitive topic that appeared to go unresolved for many victims. However, he was initially met with controversy upon the release and wasn't allowed to promote or sell his music on campus. Allay became discouraged and considered stopping his music aspirations after this situation but his dad gave him the reassurance to continue despite adversity.
30 For 30: The Rise of A Legend (2017)
In 2017, Allay Earhart returned with another project entitled ‘30 For 30: The Rise of A Legend’[9] displaying his love for his craft and paying homage to artists that influenced him.
Thus far, over the course of Allay's pursuit, he has managed to accumulate over 37,000 (downloads & streams), 1,000+ views on YouTube, and more than 600 physical copies distributed.
Notable Performances
Allay Earhart[10] performed his “Angola 3’ tribute song at Solitary Garden for the political activist, Albert Woodfox. Then, he entered a talent show competition with the winning prize to open up for Rich Homie Quan. He won the competition and used the leverage to share the opportunity with fellow contestants to showcase their talents for the main concert.
Shortly after, Allay and Ron Davalos struck a two-term deal with the NOLA Caribbean Festival which granted their company an opportunity to co-sponsor with Power 102.9 FM where he shared the same stage as Big Freedia.
Where Memories Are Made
After exploring new business ventures, Allay Earhart and Ron Davalos wanted to diversify their portfolio. The conversation about creating an event series began during a Los Angeles Lakers vs New Orleans Pelicans game, where the business partners went to watch Kobe Bryant's last game in their hometown. Kobe's soon-to-be retirement inspired Allay to think about creating a platform that could possibly sustain after their existence by curating memorable moments with people who buy into their vision. In the summer of 2019, VAKU launched its event series entitled ‘Where Memories Are Made’ in Deep Ellum, Dallas, TX. The purpose of WhereMAM is to connect people from all walks of life while providing an unforgettable experience that offers essential human needs: nourishment, camaraderie, music, and a safe environment to express oneself.
